Holmes Works Six Strong Innings But Curve Fall to B-Mets

CURVE, Pa. - Clay Holmes struck out six batters over six innings of work, but the Altoona Curve were unable to hold a late lead and fell to the Binghamton Mets, 3-2, on Monday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Holmes picked up his third no-decision in his last four starts, despite allowing just one run on two hits, which ties him for a season low and was last done on June 16 against New Hampshire.
Altoona (42-33) dropped just its second game in 38 played when holding a lead after seven innings, while Binghamton (32-42) improved to 21-10 when scoring first.
The Curve took a 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth inning, but the Mets grabbed a 3-2 lead on a two-run triple to deep center field by Amed Rosario off Miguel Rosario (Loss, 0-1).
Holmes sat down the last 14 hitters he faced, and Rosario sat down the first five he saw before three straight hits put Binghamton in front.
Altoona threatened in the bottom of the ninth against Beck Wheeler (Save, 6), issuing walks to Reese McGuire and Eric Wood, but Wheeler induced a fly out by Jin-De Jhang to clinch the win. Jhang went 0-for-1, snapping a 10-game hitting streak.
Binghamton scored the first run of the game in the top of the second on an Erich Weiss throwing error, but the Curve answered in the bottom of the fourth when Weiss scored on a McGuire RBI single into right field, tying the game at 1-1.
Jose Osuna gave the Curve their only lead of the game against Kevin McGowan (Win, 2-0) in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to left, plating Kevin Newman and giving Altoona a 2-1 advantage.
B-Mets starter Rainy Lara exited the game after 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and McGuire's RBI single, while walking one and striking out four.
Curve hitters combined to strike out ten times, while Holmes, Rosario and Josh Smith combined to punch out nine Mets hitters.
The Curve will look to win the second game of the series on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. first pitch. Altoona lefty Cody Dickson (6-3, 3.68) will oppose Binghamton right-hander Josh Zeid (1-2, 4.67). Four-time National League All-Star Jose Reyes will be in uniform for the B-Mets, as will rehabbing New York Mets outfielder Juan Lagares.
