Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Taylor and Stephen Vogt combined to drive in five of their team's six runs as the River Cats doubled-up the Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field, 6-3.
Oakland A's prospects made their presence felt early as Sonny Gray (7-4) retired the side in order-including two strikeouts-in the top of the first before Michael Choice drove in Grant Green in the bottom half, putting Sacramento ahead 1-0 after one. Tacoma took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, scoring twice on a triple from left fielder Stefen Romero.
After blanking the Rainiers in the fourth and fifth innings, the River Cats loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth for Taylor, who laced a double just beyond the reach of Tacoma center fielder Dustin Ackley, plating all three runs and putting Sacramento ahead 4-2. Tacoma scored one last time in the top of the sixth on Romero's RBI-double, but the Cats would add two insurance runs in the eighth on Vogt's two-run double, giving Sacramento its 6-3 victory.
Taylor finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs, a double and a walk, while Vogt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double and a walk. Daric Barton reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a run and two free passes, and Andy Parrino went 0-for-2 with a run and two walks of his own.
Gray earned the win, limiting Tacoma to three runs-all earned-on eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings of work. Kyler Newby and Pedro Figueroa each recorded holds with scoreless innings of work, and Gordon notched his third save, striking out two in the ninth.
The loss was charged to Brian Sweeney (7-2), who walked a career-high six batters in 4.1 innings and allowed three runs-only one of which was earned. Romero finished the afternoon 2-for-3, driving in all three Rainiers runs.
The series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. on Throwback Monday at Raley Field when southpaws Andrew Werner (6-8, 5.42 ERA) and James Paxton (3-5, 5.70 ERA) face off, as Werner looks to improve Sacramento's winning streak to three.
