Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A crowd of 14,515-the largest of the season-witnessed Travis Banwart (4-2) throw a gem as the River Cats defeated the visiting Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 6-1 on a Star Wars-themed Saturday night at Raley Field.

Banwart was mowing down Rainiers hitters from the outset, holding Tacoma scoreless through four innings. Sacramento plated two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a Michael Choice run-scoring groundout and a Daric Barton RBI single. Banwart yielded the only Rainiers run in the top of the fifth on a Robert Andino home run to left on a 2-0 pitch.

Sacramento scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth on a Luke Montz sacrifice fly, and a Scott Moore run-scoring single. Their final two runs came on a Moore RBI double in the seventh and a Stephen Vogt solo home run in the eighth. Brian Gordon came on in relief and slammed the door shut, giving Sacramento its 6-1 victory.

Banwart limited Tacoma to one run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings for the win. Gordon tallied his second save in 1.2 shutout innings pitched, allowing just one hit on three strikeouts. Barton finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Moore went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Choice finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a double, while Grant Green reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a run and two free passes. Vogt-whose home run was his ninth of the season-went 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Hector Noesi (1-1) suffered the loss, permitting four earned runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Tacoma center fielder Dustin Ackley was the only Rainier to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-5. Andino finished 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI and his first home run of the season.

The sellout crowd was the second of the season, and the 74th in River Cats and Raley Field history.

Top prospect Sonny Gray (6-4, 2.48 ERA) will look to keep the River Cats in the win column on Father's Day at Raley Field when he takes on Rainiers righty Brian Sweeney (7-1, 3.96 ERA) at 1:05 p.m., after 2,500 Kurt Suzuki bobbleheads are given away on U.S. Bank Sunday Funday.
