Bonser Throws Eight Innings, Loses to Salt Lake

Fresno, Calif. - Fresno Grizzlies right-handed pitcher Boof Bonser tossed a season-high eight innings, but he allowed five runs in the Grizzlies' 5-2 loss to the Salt Lake Bees on Sunday at Chukchansi Park.

Bonser allowed seven hits, including a two-out, two-run home run by Efren Navarro in the fifth inning that made it 5-0 Salt Lake. He also surrendered two sacrifice flies by Trent Oeltjen and Roberto Lopez in the third and fourth innings, respectively.

After Navarro's homer, Bonser faced the minimum over his final three innings. The only base runner he allowed over the final three frames was Luis Rodriguez, who reached on a throwing error by Fresno shortstop Ydwin Villegas.

Gary Brown provided the only offensive highlight for the Grizzlies with a two-run blast in the fifth inning to trim the Bees' lead to 5-2. It was Brown's fourth home run during his current seven-game hitting streak. He finished the game 2-for-4.

Brown's home run also gives Fresno a homer in seven straight games.

Salt Lake starting pitcher Billy Buckner contained the Fresno lineup to only the two runs. He scattered eight hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking one.

Kensuke Tanaka singled in the eighth inning to extend his on-base streak to 14 games, the longest by a Grizzlies hitter this season.

Jackson Williams joined Brown as the only Grizzlies hitters with multiple hits. Williams had singles in back-to-back at-bats in the fifth and seventh innings.

Fresno went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. They ended the second, fourth, and eighth innings with a runner stranded in scoring position.

The Grizzlies will look to end the homestand with a winning record when they take on Salt Lake in the series finale on Monday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Mitch Lively of Fresno will face Salt Lake's righty A.J. Schugel.
