Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Michael Taylor's 3-for-5 night extended his hitting streak to nine games, but the River Cats fell to the visiting Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 9-5 on Tuesday night at Raley Field.
Tacoma scored early and often, taking a 5-1 lead into the fourth inning. The River Cats began to chip away at the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth on a Luke Montz two-run home run. They scored once more in the bottom of the sixth when Shane Peterson crossed the plate on a grounder to second from shortstop Andy Parrino, cutting the Rainiers lead to 5-4. Reliever James Simmons, who had gotten the final two outs of the sixth inning, came back out for the seventh looking to keep Sacramento within one run.
The leadoff hitter, Endy Chavez, reached on a Sacramento fielding error. After Tacoma shortstop Carlos Triunfel reached on a single to right field, another River Cats fielding error loaded the bases. Simmons got Carlos Peguero to swing at strike three, bringing Mariners top prospect Mike Zunino to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Zunino drove the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center field, giving Tacoma a 9-4 advantage. Ninth-inning doubles from Taylor and Jemile Weeks put another River Cat run on the board, but it wasn't enough as the Rainiers held on to win, 9-5.
Taylor has hit safely in all six of Sacramento's games this season, and finished 2012 on a three-game hitting streak, bringing his hitting streak to nine. Designated hitter Jemile Weeks' ninth-inning double kept his six-game hitting streak alive. Second baseman Grant Green finished 2-for-4, bringing his batting average to .320 on the year. Montz, who finished second in the Pacific Coast League with 29 home runs in 2012, went 1-for-3 with a run, two RBIs, a walk and his first homer of the 2013 campaign.
Sacramento lefty Andrew Werner (0-2) was tagged with the loss, having given up five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Mariners prospect Danny Hultzen (2-0) earned the win for Tacoma, giving up three runs-two earned-in 5.0 innings.
The two teams return to Raley Field for the first Free Parking Wednesday presented by Jiffy Lube of the 2013 season as River Cats right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez (0-1, 0.00 ERA) takes on Rainiers righty Andrew Carraway (0-1, 4.50 ERA).
