NASHVILLE - The Oklahoma City RedHawks pitching staff had stellar night and Jimmy Paredes smacked a two-run homer as the RedHawks (5-2) took a 3-1 win over the Nashville Sounds (3-4) before 2,015 at Greer Stadium Wednesday night.
Three Oklahoma City pitchers combined to allow two hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts. Starting pitcher Jarred Cosart earned his first victory of the season after throwing five scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Cosart (1-0) struck out seven and walked three.
Nashville threatened to open the scoring in the second inning. With a runner at first and two outs, Cosart walked consecutive hitters to load the bases. Cosart then regrouped and got Caleb Gindl to ground out to end the inning.
Gindl's groundout started a run of 10 straight hitters retired by Cosart to close out his start.
The RedHawks loaded the bases with one out in the second and scored after a passed ball by Nashville catcher Dayton Buller.
With a man on base in the fourth, Paredes sent a deep line drive to right field out of the park for a two-run homer to make it 3-0. It was Paredes' first home run of the season and the first by the RedHawks in the series.
Wes Musick took over for Cosart in the sixth and continued the strong effort on the mound. He retired the first six batters he faced to put the overall run at 16 straight between the two pitchers.
However, the streak stopped with the first batter of the bottom of the eighth. Buller launched a solo homer off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left field cut the RedHawks lead to 3-1.
Musick, though, would finish the inning unscathed to keep the lead at two. Closer Jose Valdez came in for the ninth and retired the Sounds in order to record his second save of the season.
Outside of Buller's home run, the Sounds only had one runner reach base after the second inning, with none getting into scoring position.
With the victory, the RedHawks clinched a winning road trip, marking their first to open a season since 2004.
The RedHawks will look take the series from the Sound and end the road trip with a win when they meet Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
