Today's Game: The RedHawks look to clinch a winning road trip to start the season when they continue their series in Nashville at 7:05 p.m. Pitchers Jarred Cosart and Wes Musick will pair together for the first time this season.
Last Game: After Nashville erased a three-run deficit, the RedHawks plated two runs in the eighth inning to break a tie and went on to win, 5-3. One night after getting shutout, the RedHawks got off to hot start at the plate, collecting three runs four hits through the first two innings. Nashville scored runs in the third, sixth, and seventh to eventually tie the game. The RedHawks began the eighth with five straight hits, scoring twice. The Sounds brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Kevin Chapman (SV, 1) got Caleb Gindl to ground out to end the game. Starting pitcher Ross Season had a nice outing, allowing one run over five innings. Jordan Lyles (1-0) tossed the next 3.2 innings, giving up just one earned run and claimed the win.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Jarred Cosart takes the mound for the second time this season...On Saturday in Memphis, Cosart reached his pitch limit following the fourth inning...Against the Redbirds, he allowed one run and three hits with two walks and five strikeouts...Cosart spent the majority of last season with Double-A Corpus Christi...He earned Texas League All-Star honors after going 5-5 with a 3.52 ERA over 15 starts...Cosart joined the RedHawks permanently in late July...He allowed just one earned run over his last 18 innings with the RedHawks and held opponents to a .194 batting average...Cosart was limited to just 21 appearances (20 starts) last season due to blister issues, resulting in a couple of stints on the DL...Tonight is his first career outing against Nashville.
Wes Musick is slated to follow Cosart...Musick made his season debut last Friday in Memphis during Game 2 of the doubleheader...After tossing a scoreless sixth, Musick allowed four runs and four hits in the seventh before exiting with two outs...The four runs allowed were more than he gave up in 12 of his 14 outings in 2012...Musick pitched at three different levels of the Astros system last year (Lancaster, Corpus Christi, OKC) and went a combined 4-4 with a 4.04 ERA...He made six starts for the RedHawks (1-2, 3.64) and allowed two earned runs or less five time...His final action of 2012 came at Greer Stadium on June 19 as he was forced to leave early in his start with a left elbow injury.
Against the Sounds: 2013: 1-1 2012: 13-3 All-time: 128-114 In Nashville: 60-62
The RedHawks dominated last year's season series, taking 13 of 16 games, including a 10-game win streak at one point...Nashville actually had a better team batting average (.257 to .252), but the RedHawks outscored the Sounds 75-45...The RedHawks pitching staff was outstanding, posting a 2.67 ERA...Nashville won consecutive games just once, June 20-21 at Greer Stadium...The RedHawks have won the season series in four of the last five years...After failing to win a series opener last season, the Sounds won Monday night to reverse that trend.
What Else Did You Expect?: Eleven of 16 games between the RedHawks and the Sounds in 2012 were decided by two runs or less, so it's only appropriate both games of this series have also been decided by two runs or less. Both teams tied for the PCL lead in one-run wins in 2012 (28), and each of Nashville's last four wins over the RedHawks has been by a single tally.
Rockin' Robbie: Robbie Grossman is the only RedHawk to hit safely in each of the team's first six games and is just one of eight players in the PCL to do so as well. He also leads the team with six runs and six walks, and he currently has a .481 on-base percentage.
Jake Takes the Cake: Jake Elmore has recorded nine hits over the last three games, including his first career five-hit game on Sunday against Memphis. The last RedHawk with a five-hit game prior to that was Carlos Corporan on July 6, 2012 at New Orleans.
Controlling the Zone: After issuing 14 walks over the first three games of the season, the RedHawks have surrendered just three walks--including one intentionally--over the last three games. Last night was the first time this season they did not walk an opposing hitter, and it was the first walk-less game since Aug. 29, 2012 against Albuquerque.
Keeping it in the Park: The RedHawks have allowed just two home runs through their first six games. Until Brock Peterson's solo home run in the bottom of the 11th Sunday, the RedHawks pitching staff had not given up a home run in 113 consecutive innings. The last player to go yard against the RedHawks was Diory Hernandez of the Iowa Cubs in the 8th inning on Aug.26, 2012. Going back to last season, the RedHawks have allowed just eight dingers over the last 29 contests, spanning 256 IP.
Long Time Coming: On Sunday, reliever Jose Valdez recorded his first win in nearly two years. The club's career saves leader had not earned a victory since April 12, 2011 during an 8-7 win in Nashville. Valdez made 98 appearances with the RedHawks, Astros, and GCL Astros in between wins.
Running Into Trouble: Through the first six games, the RedHawks have had five baserunners picked off and five others caught stealing. They are 5-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Recent Transactions: Both pitcher John Ely (elbow) and infielder Jose Martinez (hand) were placed on the disabled list yesterday retroactive to April 7. Catcher Chris Wallace was added to the active roster from the Temporary Inactive List. The RedHawks are currently carrying 24 active players, one short of the maximum allowed.
