Tacoma Rainiers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Rainiers combined to hit three home runs and catcher Mike Zunino recorded his first career grand slam as Tacoma belted their way to a 9-5 win over the Sacramento River Cats at Raley Field on Tuesday night.
Zunino went deep with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning - his league-leading fourth home run over his first five games this season. The third overall pick in the 2012 draft currently leads all the minor leagues with 16 RBI, and eight of his first nine hits have gone for extra bases.
Outfielder Denny Almonte was the first to start Tacoma's launch party, expanding the Rainiers lead to 4-1 with a two-run homer in the second inning. Third baseman Alex Liddi went deep for the third time this season with a solo shot in the third and paved the way to a 5-1 advantage for the Rainiers.
Liddi ended the night with two hits, including a two-run single that put Tacoma on top 2-0 in the first. Carlos Triunfel turned in the other multi-hit effor after going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Outfielders Carlos Peguero and Eric Thames both collected hits to extend their PCL-best hitting streaks to six games.
Starter Danny Hultzen (2-0) picked up his second win in his second turn in the Rainiers rotation. The left-hander held Sacramento to three runs - two earned - on four hits over 5.0 innings and struck out six with just one walk issued.
Tonight's win over the River Cats puts Tacoma's record above .500 for the first time August 16, 2011 - a stretch of 169 games.
The Rainiers look to secure a series win in the third game of the club's four-game series with the River Cats at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, April 10. Right-hander Andrew Carraway (0-1, 4.50) gets the start for Tacoma against right-hander Jesse Chavez (0-1, 0.00).
