Tacoma Rainiers News Release
El Paso, TX - The Tacoma Rainiers (34-37) lost a third straight and are off to an 0-2 start on this road trip, with a 7-6 setback to the El Paso Chihuahuas (31-40) on Wednesday evening. Tacoma's road woes are reflected in a 13-22 record away from Cheney Stadium this season.
Taylor Trammell doubled to the centerfield wall in the second inning, later scoring on a Brian O'Keefe single up the middle. The 1-0 visiting lead was quickly erased by El Paso, who scored three times in both the second and third. Brett Sullivan and former Rainier Jantzen Witte each doubled for an RBI in the second; former Rainier Tim Lopes (12) and Jose Azocar (3) each homered in the third. A runner was on for Azocar's blast.
Still trailing 6-1 in the sixth, Tacoma's Zach DeLoach lifted his second homer in as many nights and his seventh of the season, a solo shot to right-center.
The two earned runs against El Paso right-hander Anderson Espinoza were footnotes, as he struck out 12 Rainiers over six complete innings (5 H, 2 BB). Lefty Blake Weiman (2.0 IP, 4 K), the rehabbing Trevor Gott (1.0 IP, 2 K) and Stephen Kolek (2.0 IP) each spun scoreless outings for Tacoma.
Behind 7-2 in the ninth, a furious four-run Rainiers rally stalled one short. A Colin Moran single and a Mason McCoy walk set the table for Sam Haggerty's first homer this season in either the Majors or Triple-A, 392 feet to right center, making it a 7-5 game with only one out. After Cade Marlowe doubled to right, he scored on a Trammell liner to center with two down for the game's final run, as Tacoma has been defeated by only a lone run in each of the first two games of the trip. Trammell and Moran each tallied a game-high three hits.
17 Rainiers strikeouts at the plate equaled a season-high, and were a 2023-high for a nine-inning game.
The midpoint of this weeklong series will be on Thursday, with a 5:35 PT/6:35 MT first pitch at Southwest University Park. RHP Darren McCaughan will start for Tacoma, opposite El Paso LHP Jay Groome.
Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com. All 2023 Rainiers games, home and away, can also be heard for free on the MiLB First Pitch app. HD video broadcasts of every home game can be viewed with a MiLB.TV subscription.
