Tacoma Rainiers News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Tacoma Rainiers (32-23) avoided a series sweep with a 9-5 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies (26-31) on Sunday afternoon at Chuckchansi Park.
The Rainiers offense collected a season-high 18 hits on the afternoon, led by a 4-for-5, three RBI performance from first baseman Daniel Vogelbach. Center fielder Leonys Martin (3x6, 2 R, 3B), right fielder Danny Muno (3x6, R, 2B), and shortstop Ryan Jackson (3x5, R, 2 RBI) were close behind with three hits each. Second baseman Zach Shank (2x5, R, 3B) and left fielder Tyler O'Neill (2x4, 2 R, 2B) rounded out Tacoma's multi-hit efforts.
The Rainiers scored in each of the first three innings, providing more than enough run support to overcome a three-run rally from the Grizzlies in the bottom of the second.
Tacoma scored two in the first, highlighted by a solo home run from Vogelbach, three in the second on a trio of RBI singles from Jackson, Shank, and Vogelbach, and two more in the third inning. After the first three frames, the Rainiers led the Grizzlies by four runs, 7-3.
Fresno chipped into the Tacoma lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, making the Rainiers lead 7-5. However, they would get no closer than that; a throwing error in the top of the seventh and an RBI single from Vogelbach in the ninth pushed the Rainiers lead out to 9-5, the eventual final score.
Rainiers starting pitcher Andrew Moore worked 4.0 innings on 65 pitches (43 strikes); he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out three.
Ryne Harper earned the win out of the Tacoma bullpen after tossing a scoreless fifth inning with three strikeouts. Dean Kiekhefer (2.0 IP) turned in a sterling outing, holding the Grizzlies without a hit over two innings of scoreless work. Jean Machi took over in the eighth inning and recorded the final five outs of the contest for Tacoma, earning his seventh save of the season.
The Rainiers return home on Monday night to kick off a four-game series against the division-leading Reno Aces. Left-hander Dillon Overton (1-0, 5.65) will take the mound for the Rainiers, opposite Aces right-hander Zack Godley (2-1, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT.
