Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev. - The Aces split the series with Las Vegas after a four to one victory Sunday afternoon lead by Reno right-hander Frank Duncan. Duncan (5-4) tossed four no-hit innings and finished after seven total with one run allowed on four hits, earning his fourth straight win. Ketel Marte, who homered in games one and three, came up big with a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth, finishing 1-for-4 on the day.
After two innings of pitching duel action, the Aces broke the rhythm in the third with a leadoff double by Hank Conger. Duncan continued with a ground out to second to set up for Ildemaro Vargas' sac-fly to score Conger and take a 1-0 lead.
With just one hit allowed through four innings, Duncan allowed his next in the fifth, coming off the bat of Brandon Nimmo, who doubled to lead off the inning. In a first and third situation with no outs, Dominic Smith grounded out to score Nimmo from third and even the game at 1-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, after Duncan led off with a single and Vargas flied out to center, Marte turned on and sent a ball deep over the right-field fence to give the Aces a two-run advantage. The Aces added an insurance run the very next at bat when Oswaldo Arcia hit a deep fly into the right-center corner, stretching a triple and scoring on a ball thrown out of play to seal the 4-1 lead.
Duncan completed his night after seven innings of one-run ball while collecting four strikeouts. Erik Davis made his second appearance of the series, only giving up one hit with two strikeouts. Jimmie Sherfy locked down the series split with one shutout inning while earning his fifth save of the season.
The 4-1 win brings Reno to a record of 35-22. The Aces begin an eleven-game road trip tomorrow at Tacoma, before making their way to Sacramento and Salt Lake. Right-hander Zack Godley will take the mound tomorrow in the first game against the Rainiers. The Aces return home on June 17 when they will take on the Las Vegas 51s.
