T-Devils Rally Past Elmira, 3-2

April 2, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

ELMIRA, NY (April 2, 2008) - The Trenton Devils now officially have Elmira's number. Rallying to come back for a 3-2 win tonight, the Devils have won four of their past six contests against the Jackals after having lost the first five games of the season against the New York squad.

Trenton found a potential go-ahead goal washed out in the first period, when referee Eric Ernst ruled that a Devils skater had kicked in a rebound off a Zach Tarkir blast 16 minutes in.

The Jackals' top line would then score the match's first goal 34 minutes after the opening faceoff, when Pierre-Luc Faubert tipped a loose rebound past Jason Smith eight seconds into the Jackals' second power play opportunity.

Trenton did not stay behind for long, however, when they got the nod from the officials in a goal similar to their first period try. Chris Poli was credited with a score created when a shot into fast-moving traffic from behind the net hit off a skate and past Joel Martin three minutes after the Faubert tally.

Trenton took a temporary lead in the third period. Eric Castonguay scored his second goal in three games after the Devils had failed to convert on a 1:41 5-on-3 power play.

The Quebecois forward slipped into Jackals territory after the power play had elapsed and caught Elmira napping on a change, rifling the rubber into the top right corner of Martin's net.

After Elmira's Chaz Johnson tied the game on a one-timer set up by Benoit Doucet, the Devils searched for a way to come back. They found it immediately after killing a minor penalty with four minutes to play.

Jason Paige and Castonguay raced into the Elmira zone and cycled the puck around to Stephen Wood lurking at the right side of the blue line. The Devils defenseman sniped the puck into the stick-side shelf for his ECHL-defensemen-leading 16th goal of the season.

Jason Smith earned his twelfth win of the season by stopping 21 of 23 shots. Trenton went 0/5 on the power play, but kept Elmira to just one goal on five man-advantage tries.

The Devils return home to Sovereign Bank Arena for one last homestand, playing the Elmira Jackals and Cincinnati Cyclones. Friday night Trenton squares up against Elmira for the final time this season, at 7:30pm.
