Dayton Bombers News Release

Wheeling, WV - The Dayton Bombers (28-31-6-6), taking on the Wheeling Nailers (22-41-3-4) at First Arena, came into tonight's game having already clinched the 5th and final playoff spot for the North Division. Wheeling, having landed up in last place in the division, came out playing as if the team were in first instead, firing 11 shots on the Bombers net-minder, Rejean Beauchemin. The Nailers lit up the scoreboard first when Sean Collins ripped a slapper past Beauchemin at the 8:35 mark in the first period. Wheeling got a second goal of the game on a slapshot just 4 minutes later to give the Nailers a 2-0 lead. Dayton launched 10 shots in the period on Wheeling's Ryan Scott. Both teams had a power play in the period with neither team capitalizing.

The Bombers got onto the scoreboard early in the 2nd period as Brad Bonello, who had already fired off 3 shots in the game, rocketed one in to earn his 19th of the year less than 5 minutes in. The goal came on Dayton's 2nd power play of the night, with the assists going to Jim Henkemeyer and Mike Berry. The Bombers' defense held the Wheeling offense to only 1 shot on goal in the period, while the Bombers took 9 shots, totaling 19 shots through 2 periods. The period saw a total of 10 penalty minutes with 4 going against Dayton.

Jim Henkemeyer earned his 2nd point of the night when he notched his 2nd goal of the season ripping one into the back of the net on a power play to tie the game at 2-2 just 7 minutes into the 3rd period. The assists on the tying goal went to Petr Pohl and Mike Berry, who also earned his second point of the night. The goal would be the lone one in the period as this game headed into overtime. The period also saw its share of penalties, with a total of 22 penalty minutes-11 for each team. Great saves and strong defense combined to hold off a late Wheeling power play. Rejean Beauchemin stopped all 9 shots that he faced in the period, giving him 19 saves through 3 periods. Dayton outshot Wheeling in regulation play 27-21.

The overtime period witnessed just 1 shot on net, which was all that was needed, as Wheeling's Sean Collins earned the game winner just over a minute into the frame, ending the game at 3-2.

The Dayton Bombers take the ice against the Johnstown Chiefs this Saturday, April 5, for FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT at the Nutter Center for the final regular season home game.
