Boise, ID - The Idaho Stampede (4-13) went on a big run from the end of the third quarter to the beginning of the fourth to hand the New Mexico Thunderbirds (10-8) their second consecutive loss by a score of 110-90.
Five Stampede players scored in double figures, led by Carlos Wheeler who had a game high 26 points.
In the first quarter, the Thunderbirds raced out to an early 13-2 lead in the first four and a half minutes of the game. The Stampede would outscore the T-Birds 21-10 the rest of the quarter to close to within five points at 28-23. Dominique Coleman led all scorers with 12 points in the first quarter.
The Stampede opened the second quarter on a 17-4 run to take their first lead of the game. The Thunderbirds answered with a 16-8 run to tie up the score with 55 seconds left in the half, but the Stampede score six of the final eight points of the half and held a 54-50 lead at the break.
With the score tied 69-69 and 3:20 remaining in the third quarter, the Stampede went on an 11-2 run to go up by nine points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Stampede continued their run into the fourth quarter, scoring the first 9 points of the quarter to pull ahead by 18 points. The Thunderbirds got back within 11 points, but the Stampede pulled away down the stretch for the 20 point victory.
The Thunderbirds and Stampede will be back in action tomorrow night from Qwest Arena with a 7:00 p.m. tip.
New Mexico will return home to the Santa Ana Star Center for two games against the Tulsa 66ers on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
