SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts (34-31, 81-53) scored five runs in the seventh inning to back an outstanding start from Noah Syndergaard in a 5-4 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-36, 66-71) in the rubber match of a three-game series on Friday night at the Cove.

With the win, Lansing clinches the best overall record in the Eastern Division, gaining home field advantage in the 2nd round of the Midwest League postseason.

Syndergaard allowed just one base runner, a first-inning single, in five innings of work. The righty retired the final thirteen batters he faced, walked none and struck out a career-high nine batters.

Lansing's five-run outburst in the seventh was sparked by Kevin Patterson's (1-for-4) solo home run with one out, his 19th of the year, tying him for second in the Midwest League. Nick Baligod (1-for-3) later scored on a wild pitch in the inning before Dalton Pompey (1-for-5) delivered a two-RBI triple, scoring the fifth run himself on a throwing error by Silver Hawks shortstop Raul Navarro.

The Silver Hawks made the game interesting by scoring four runs against Ian Kadish in the bottom of the eighth. Navarro drove in a run on a two-out infield single. Chris Ellison recorded a two-RBI single. Ajay Meyer (Save, 33) then entered the game and gave up an RBI double to Sean Jamison to make it a one-run game.

Meyer pitched around a two-out single in the ninth to complete the four-out save. Brandon Berl (Win, 4-7) recorded all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings. Berl and Syndergaard combined to retire 19 Silver Hawks in a row from the first to the seventh innings.

The game was a pitchers' duel early between Syndergaard and Tyler Green (Loss, 4-9). The Silver Hawks' starter did not allow a run until the five-run seventh. Green worked 6 2/3 innings, allowed five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.

With the win, the Lugnuts win the three-game series and finish the year 11-4 against South Bend.

Lansing returns home for their final regular series of the year beginning on Saturday, September 1st, against Lake County with $0.50 hot dogs and postgame LAFCU Fireworks. The Lugnuts will start Justin Nicolino (10-4, 2.41). Lake County will have righty Mason Radeke (7-6, 3.55).
