PCL1 San Antonio Missions

Sweet Applauds Team's 3-2 Road Trip

April 9, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

Missions manager Rick Sweet said he liked the way his team played in Oklahoma City in its season-opening series, but he lamented a few missed opportunities.

"Anytime you go on the road and you're over .500, you're happy," Sweet said Tuesday afternoon. "But I'm not as happy, because I thought we should have been 4-1."

Playing their first home game in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, the Missions (3-2) will turn the page from the Oklahoma City series to take on the Memphis Redbirds (2-2) Tuesday night, kicking off a seven-game homestand.

The Missions, a Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, will play three against Memphis (St. Louis Cardinals) and then four against Nashville (Texas Rangers).

In Oklahoma City, the Missions were leading 3-0 Monday afternoon when the Dodgers erupted for five runs in the seventh inning en route to a 5-4 victory.

Pitching is key

Missions starting pitchers excelled in the first series, allowing only three earned runs in 26 innings for a 1.04 ERA. But the bullpen was not effective at all. Relief pitchers allowed 13 earned runs in 17 innings for a 6.88 ERA.

Homestand starters

Opening-day starter Adrian Houser will pitch Tuesday's home opener, followed by Bubba Derby on Wednesday and Zack Brown on Thursday, all against Memphis.

Against Nashville, the Missions will go with Aaron Wilkerson on Friday, Burch Smith on Saturday, Houser again on Sunday and Derby on Monday.

Stokes injury is 'minor'

Missions outfielder Troy Stokes Jr. was placed on the seven-day injured list Sunday with what has been reported as stiffness in the left lattisimus dorsi, which is a large muscle on the back.

"It's a very, very minor thing," Sweet said. "We were overly cautious with it. He should be back in the seven-day period."

Stokes played in the opener at Oklahoma City last Thursday, picking up two hits, and then didn't play again.

Jeffress in town for rehab

Brewers veteran relief pitcher Jeremy Jeffress is expected to pitch Tuesday and possibly twice more on the homestand on a rehabilitation assignment.

Jeffress is a 10th-year major league veteran who was 8-1, with a 1.29 ERA out of the pen, for last year's National League Central Division champions.
