LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (August 12, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Vejigantes (57-51) were defeated by the Worcester Wepas 14-4 on Friday evening in the third Copa de la Diversión game at PNC Field this season.

Worcester struck for three runs in the game's opening frame. Abraham Almonte and Enmanuel Valdez hit back-to-back big flies to give the Wepas an early 3-0 advantage. Almonte has three homers over the last two games. The Vejigantes answered with a run-scoring single from Ben Rortvedt in the home half of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.

After the Wepas extended their lead to 4-1 in the second, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre chipped away in the third. Oswaldo Cabrera and Blake Perkins drove in one run each to get the Vejigantes to within one at 4-3. Cabrera finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair driven in.

Worcester responded with three more tallies in the fourth via Valdez's second long ball of the night to make it 7-3. Valdez went 4-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI. SWB got one back in the bottom of the frame on a Cabrera double to right. The Wepas then broke the game open with seven combined runs in the sixth through eighth innings in the 14-4 final. The top five hitters in Worcester's lineup were 14-for-25 at the plate with five home runs and all 14 RBI. Jake Thompson (1-0) picked up the victory out of Worcester's bullpen. Sean Boyle (0-1) suffered the loss in his season debut with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Worcester Red Sox for the first time this season. The WooSox have not been here since August 3 - August 8 when they took four of six games in that series.

THIS IS FINE - On Friday, Worcester tallied 14 runs on 16 hits. Fourteen runs matched a season-high for any RailRiders' opponent this season (April 15, 14-7 loss to Norfolk). Sixteen hits came one shy of matching a season-high for a RailRiders' opponent this year. The WooSox also tallied five home runs, season-highs for both their offense and SWB's pitching staff.

BANGED UP - Through this twelve-game homestand (game 11 tonight), the RailRiders have suffered seven injuries of varying degrees. Estevan Florial missed two games but returned Friday. Oswald Peraza missed a game but returned Wednesday. Jake Bauers was placed on the 7-Day injured list on August 8. Josh Breaux was placed on the 7-Day injured list on August 10. Both Michael Beltre and Ronald Guzmán have been day-to-day since Thursday. Tyler Wade was lifted in the sixth inning on Friday.

MY LIFE BE LIKE (W)OO AH - In their first seven games of the year against Worcester, the RailRiders went 2-5. In the last nine games, they have gone 7-2.

SO BABY PULL ME CLOSER - The RailRiders are 15-16 in one-run games. Weirdly enough, the WooSox are also 15-16 in one-run games.

ARMANDO'S AUGUST - Armando Alvarez finds himself on his second seven-game hitting streak of the season, his longest this year. He has gone 9-for-27 (.333) with five doubles since August third. He has a hit in every game played in the month of August. Dating back to July 17, Alvarez has tallied a hit in 11 of his last 12 games played.

WIZARD OF OS - Since returning from a right shoulder injury on July 12, Oswaldo Cabrera is 27-for-85 (.318) with six homers, 20 RBI and 11 walks in 22 games. He enters Saturday with an official 16-game on-base streak. If you include Sunday's rain-suspended game, that on-base streak is 17. He has hits in eight of nine games played in August and is slashing .421/.394/.815 this month.

MÁN OF THE HOUR - Ronald Guzmán has a hit in 14 of his last 17 games dating back to July 8. In this stretch, he's gone 22-for-60 (.367) with eight doubles and four home runs. Entering Thursday, he has raised his average from .197 to .240 and his on-base percentage from .314 to .347.

STREAKY - Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in 19 straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season. This scoreless streak has lasted 20.0 innings...

ONE BIG SWING - Wednesday, Ronald Guzmán gave the RailRiders the lead in the eighth inning with a two-run homer for an eventual 3-2 win. They were trailing 2-1 before the blast. It was just their fifth win this season when trailing after seven innings. It was the second time this season that the RailRiders took the lead with two outs in the eighth with a homer. Tim Locastro launched a solo shot on June 19 against the Rochester Red Wings for a 5-4 win.

AY BAY BAY -On Thursday, Chris Owings played one inning before being removed from the game as his wife Brittany went into labor with their second child. Before the game, Braden Bristo also left the team for the same reason as his wife Morgan went into labor. These two come after Max McDowell and his wife Emily celebrated the birth of their child back in July.

ON DECK - Sunday is Sunday Family Funday, presented by Geisinger and Q92. Kids can play catch on the field from noon until 12:20 PM, get $2 Dippin Dots and Mamita's Ices all game long and can run the bases after the final out.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (71-42) lost in ten innings 3-2 to the Boston Red Sox. Aaron Judge hit his 46th home run in the defeat. Frankie Montas faces Kutter Crawford tonight at 7:15 PM at Fenway... The Somerset Patriots (65-40) won 7-3 over the Hartford Yard Goats last night. Deivi García struck out ten batters, his most in a single game since 2019. He surrendered just two hits in five innings. Matt Sauer makes his Double-A debut tonight at 7:05 PM... The Hudson Valley Renegades (56-49) lost 10-0 to the Aberdeen IronBirds. The 'Gades tallied just four hits in the loss. Richard Fitts makes his High-A debut tonight at 6:05 PM after being named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week last week for the Tarpons... The Tampa Tarpons (50-54) lost 7-2 to the Dunedin Blue Jays. Kyle Battle set a career-high with three stolen bases. The Tarpons have lost three of four games to Dunedin. They play tonight at 6:30 PM...
