Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (49-61) were defeated 5-3 on Saturday night at Principal Park, giving the Louisville Bats (45-65) at least a series split.
Hayden Wesneski took the mound for Iowa in his second start since joining the organization at the trade deadline. He gave up singles to the first two hitters he faced, but then struck out the side to get out of the first inning unscathed. He followed that up with three straight one-two-three innings, including another three-strikeout frame in the third.
For the Bats, their starter, Deck McGuire, also held his opponents scoreless through three. The I-Cubs managed just a pair of singles before the fourth inning, when they kicked off the scoring. Alfonso Rivas led off the inning with a single, then scored on a double from Frank Schwindel. Schwindel then reached third on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI groundout from Jared Young, putting the I-Cubs up 2-0.
That score only held until the next half inning, when the Bats finally got to Wesneski. After the first two batters of the inning reached on a single and a walk, Chuckie Robinson drove in Louisville's first run with a single. Isiah Gilliam followed that up with an RBI double, then - after Wyatt Short took over for Iowa - Lorenzo Cedrola drove in both remaining baserunners with a double of his own. He came around to score on an RBI groundout, making it a 5-2 ballgame in favor of Louisville.
The I-Cubs managed to tack on another run in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Young, cutting the Bats' lead to two, but were unable to complete a comeback. Fernando Cruz walked the leadoff man, but induced a double play and faced only three batters in a scoreless ninth, earning his third save of the series and closing out a 5-3 victory for Louisville.
POSTGAME NOTES:
