LAST TIME OUT: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders struggled at the plate on Friday night at PNC Field as they fell to the Rochester Red Wings 9-1.
The Red Wings scored in the top of the first inning when Nick Gordon and Gregorio Petit both singled. Gordon was later plated when Kennys Vargas hit a weak ground ball to first that gave Rochester a 1-0 lead. They added to their total in the top of the second as Zack Granite singled and then advanced to second when he tagged up on a deep fly ball off the bat of Juan Graterol. Leonardo Reginatto then brought home Granite with a base hit.
In the top of the fourth Granite singled and advanced to second on a fielders' choice. Reginatto also singled to bring Granite home and pick up his second RBI of the game. They piled on more runs in the top half of the fifth as Motter singled and Petit smacked a two-run home run to give the Red Wings a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, Granite picked up his third hit of the night with a double down the right-field line.
The RailRiders plated their first and only run in the bottom of the sixth as Abiatal Avelino led off with a walk. Francisco Diaz singled to move Avelino to third and Shane Robinson smacked a deep sacrifice fly to right to bring home Avelino. For Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Francisco Diaz was 2-for-3 with two singles. He had the only hits for the RailRiders on the night. Josh Rogers suffered the loss throwing seven innings allowing seven runs on 13 hits.
PITCHING STAYS HOT: The RailRiders pitching staff had turned a corner since the calendar flipped to July. In the first 9G in July, the staff had thrown 80.0 innings and allowed 25R/16ER for a 1.80 ERA. The team entered July with a 3.94 staff ERA and has lowered it to 3.71 before Friday's performance.
...AND JUSTUS FOR ALL: LHP Justus Sheffield got the final start before the All-Star Break for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and went 5.1 IP, 5 H, R/ER, 7 K. It might be a while before he pitches for the RailRiders again because Sheffield was selected to participate in the 2018 SiriusXM Futures Game Sunday at Nationals Park in Washington D.C. Baseball America ranked Sheffield as the, trailing only INF Gleyber Torres and OF Estevan Florial. In 15G/14GS, the southpaw is 3-5 with a 2.49 ERA and 88 K (10.0 K/9), 36 BB (2.4 K:BB) over 79.1 IP between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A SWB. Sheffield is the first RailRiders player to be tabbed for the Futures Game since OF Aaron Judge was selected to Team USA in 2015. The lone Yankees representative last season was RHP Domingo Acevedo who allowed 3R/3ER on 4H in his one inning of work for the World Team.
ROLLING INTO THE BREAK: Over the last 29G the RailRiders have own a 19-10 record to bring them up to 2nd place in the International League North standings. The RailRiders are 7-0-2 in their last nine series and won 6-of-7 games leading into the All-Star Break before dropping the first two games of their series against Rochester. If SWB isn't able to win both Saturday and Sunday it will be the first series they lose since dropping 2-of-3 games June 5-7 against the Durham Bulls.
WINGING IT: The RailRiders continue to get a strong performance out of its bullpen over the last two weeks. In 21G since June 17, the bullpen arms not named MLB rehabber RHP A.J. Cole have combined for 76.0 IP, 46 H (5.4 H/9), 21R/16ER (1.89 ERA).
A FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS: While the RailRiders were off on the All-Star Break, the New York Yankees made several moves affecting the roster. RHP Giovanny Gallegos was sent up and back to New York as the 26th Man on Monday's doubleheader, RHP Luis Cessa made a spot-start against Baltimore Monday (6.0 IP, 0 R, 4 K) and has since been optioned back to the RailRiders (yet to report) and INF Brandon Drury has been optioned back to Triple-A, appeared in Friday's lineup.
