Means, Mullins Can't Keep Tides Afloat
July 14, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
John Means turned in another solid start and Cedric Mullins continued his torrid hitting, but the Tides dropped a 4-3 decision to the Gwinnett Stripers Saturday night at Harbor Park.
Means took a no-decision despite turning in his fifth consecutive Quality Start. He allowed three runs on six hits over six innings of work, walking one and striking out three while throwing 65 of his 96 pitches for strikes. Over his last eight starts, the West Virginia University product has now gone 3-0 with a 2.64 ERA (14 ER, 47.2 IP), 51 strikeouts and just three walks. In 19 outings between Norfolk and Baltimore this season, he leads all Orioles minor leaguers with 101 strikeouts.
Mullins doubled and singled in the contest to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by a Tides player this season. Both of his hits came off of Gwinnett starter Lucas Sims, a teammate of Mullins when the pair both attended Brookwood High School in Snellville, GA. Over his 14-game stretch - the longest current hitting streak in the International League - Mullins has batted .393 (24-61) with six doubles, two triples, two home runs and six RBI.
Rubén Tejada doubled, singled, scored a run and drove in another to help pace Norfolk's eight-hit attack, while Garabez Rosa added two hits in the setback. Tejada knotted the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning with a run-scoring double, but Gwinnett answered back with an unearned run off of Francisco Jimenez (0-1) to take the lead.
Elian Leyva (1-1) earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief for the Stripers, with Jacob Webb picking up the save after throwing a scoreless ninth.
The two clubs will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 4:05. Chris Tillman (0-1, 8.38) is set to make a rehab start for the Tides and will be opposed by right-hander Wes Parsons (4-2, 2.98).
Notes: Earlier Saturday, the Orioles recalled catcher Austin Wynns from Norfolk to take the roster spot of C Chance Sisco, who was optioned to the Tides on Friday night. Catcher Stuart Levy was reinstated from the Norfolk disabled list to take Wynns' roster spot...Sean Gilmartin made his Tides debut, allowing a hit and picking up a strikeout in 0.2 innings of relief...Norfolk finished the contest 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position...The Tides wore pink jerseys as part of a Bat For The Cure promotion.
