Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders dropped a 3-2 decision to the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night at PNC Field.
ONE-RUN FUN: The Knights (31-31) improved their record in one-run games to 13-7, tying them for the most one-run wins in the league. Only Columbus (12-6) has a better winning percentage in single-score IL games. The RailRiders (6-8) have the second-fewest one-run wins and the fewest one-run games played in the IL.
HERE'S A STORY: Brady Lail (2-2) shouldered a tough loss despite striking out a Triple-A career-high eight batters. He allowed three runs, all in the third, on six hits across six innings. It was his fifth quality start over his last six SWB nods.
I'M JUST A CAVEMAN: Jake Cave posted a hit as he reached the century mark in at-bats with this year's RailRiders. He owns four triples over 26 games with the RailRiders. Since his first game with this year's unit on May 11, Cave has gone 30-for-100, slashing .300/.340/.520/.860. In that time, only Durham's Dayron Varona (16) has more extra-base hits than Cave (14) in the IL. Add his three triples from his month of action with Double-A Trenton to start the season, and his seven total three-basers tie him for sixth in all of MiLB. Advanced-A Tampa's Jorge Mateo stands tied for second in the minors with eight.
@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka doubled and scored last night. "Higgy" entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as Double-A Trenton's primary catcher to start the year. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he has hit safely in nine straight, going 15-for-35 with slashes of .429/.444/.800/1.244. In that time he has three homers, four doubles, eight RBIs and eight runs scored. He has caught four SWB shutouts over his 10 games behind the plate.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin from Double-A Trenton Saturday. He spent most of 2015 with SWB (73GP, .235/.309/.311/.620), usually playing right field. Mostly a first baseman this year at Double-A, in 50 games he slashed .260/.367/.395/.762 with a team-high 29 RBIs while ranking second on the club in doubles (10). He launched a homer in his first 2016 Triple-A plate appearance Saturday against Columbus. Wednesday, he cranked another home run. He has driven in six runs over the last three games. In his first go-round at Triple-A in 2015, he hit eight doubles and four home runs in 299 plate appearances. He has three doubles and two dingers in just 24 plate appearances over his six games with this year's unit.
KNIGHTED: From 2005-13, SWB did not lose the season series to Charlotte at home or overall, going a 45-26 including 25-12 in NEPA. That changed with a 5-10 overall mark and 2-5 home record versus the Knights between 2014 (2-6, 1-3) and 2015 (3-4, 1-2). With last night's loss, the RailRiders settled for an NEPA split.
GUILTY AS CHARGED: Aaron Judge extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the sixth. He batted third for a second straight day after hitting second over each of his first 55 games this season. He has gone 11-for-26 with three doubles, four RBIs and five walks over his last seven games, scoring seven runs. In that time, he has slashed .423/.516/.538/1.055. He entered play against Columbus one week ago in a 7-for-60 (.117) slide with no extra-base hits (SLG .117), three RBIs, four walks (.206 OBP) and 21 strikeouts over his prior 16 games. His third-inning double on Friday ended an 0-for-24 drought. He leads the team with 29 RBIs and outfield assists.
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The RailRiders took two of three versus the Clippers at PNC Field last August. That made for the SWB franchise's first series win over Columbus in NEPA since the last Red Barons swept Dave Miley's Clippers in a four-game set from April 18-21, 2006. The Clippers took three of four when the clubs met in Moosic last week.
SO CLOSE, BUT SO FAR: SWB and Columbus split the 2015 series, 3-3, with four of the games decided by one run. Eighteen of the last 35 clashes between the clubs have come down to a single score with Columbus taking 11 of those close calls. The RailRiders have lost 20 of the last 25 meetings with 12 one-run finals.
