The Toledo Mud Hens scored seven runs in the eighth inning, coming back to beat the first place Red Wings 9-7 Friday night at Frontier Field.

The teams meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., with sports entertainers The ZOOperstars! performing, and fireworks after the game. Complete promotions details below....

The Mud Hens' lineup featured three of the International League's top 10 hitters, and the Hens picked up three hits in the first inning against Jason Wheeler. With two outs and the bases loaded, Wheeler struck out Tyler Collins to escape with a scoreless first. A key defensive play by third baseman James Beresford helped erase a baserunner in the inning.

Beresford led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle against Buck Farmer; the hit helped Beresford boost his on-base streak to 21 straight games. A one-out double by Jorge Polanco put runners at second and third, and that's when Kennys Vargas boomed a triple to the gap in right-center. The hit scored both runners for a 2-0 Red Wings lead. Eddie Rosario followed with a single, driving in Vargas and making the score 3-0.

Wheeler found himself in a jam again in the second inning, but was unable to escape without any damage this time. A leadoff walk given up by Wheeler was eventually driven in with a two-out single from JaCoby Jones to cut the Rochester lead to 3-1.

After a difficult first couple of innings for Wheeler, the lefty really found his groove in the third and fourth innings. In those innings, he didn't allow a baserunner, while picking up his third punchout of the night.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rosario clubbed a homer into the right field bullpen, extending the Rochester lead to 4-1. It was Rosario's fourth home run with the Wings.

The bottom of the fifth saw the Wings increase their lead again. A one-out walk from John Ryan Murphy was followed up with a screaming line-drive that hit the wall in right center from Beresford which made the score 5-1 for Rochester. The Red Wings were unable to push across any further runs as Beresford was stranded at second base.

In the top of the sixth Wheeler allowed his first baserunner since the second inning, but it was a monstrous homer from Casey McGehee over the bullpen in left field to cut the Wings lead to 5-2. Wheeler didn't allow the homer to get to him however, as he was able to retire the next two batters he faced.

Angel Nesbitt replaced Farmer in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Farmer finished his evening pitching five innings, allowing six hits, five runs and one walk while striking out six.He threw 85 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Wheeler's night ended in the seventh inning when he was replaced by Marcus Walden. Wheeler finished his start with six innings pitched - the eighth time in nine starts he has worked at least six innings - and six hits allowed. Wheeler gave up two earned runs, walked two, and struck out three while throwing 95 pitches, 62 for strikes.

The Mud Hens loaded the bases with none out in the eighth against Walden, and that prompted a pitching change with Sean Burnett taking over on the mound. Burnett (0-1) allowed a single to Tyler Collins, bringing in a run and making the score 5-3 Wings. Former Wing John Hicks followed with a bases-clearing double into the left field corner, giving the Mud Hens the lead at 6-5. Alex Wimmers relieved Burnett and allowed a bloop single, a successful safety squeeze, and a two-run single, improving Toledo's lead to 9-5.

Ryan O'Rourke pitched a scoreless ninth inning, and got help from a spectacular catch by Rosario - who tracked down a ball hit by Casey McGehee to the deepest part of the ballpark in left-center.

The Red Wings loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth against Preston Guilmet, and the Hens brought in Bruce Rondon from the bullpen. Rondon allowed a bloop two-run single to Logan Schafer, bringing the Wings to within two runs at 9-7. Rondon retired Polanco to end the rally and earn his seventh save.

Logan Kensing (1-1) picked up the win in relief. The Mud Hens out-hit the Red Wings 13-10; base hits extended hitting streaks for Polanco (eight games) and Rosario (seven games).
