Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Lucas Sims allowed just one run over 5.0 innings and eight different Gwinnett Braves (28-34) recorded a hit in a 4-2 victory over the Norfolk Tides (21-41) on Friday night at Coolray Field.
Sims (W, 2-5) struck out seven and threw 48 of 83 pitches for strikes to earn his first win at home and send the G-Braves to their third straight victory following a seven-game losing streak.
Ozzie Albies kick-started a three-run rally in the third inning with a two-run triple and Emilio Bonifacio lifted a sacrifice fly immediately after against Norfolk starter Nick Additon (L, 1-6).
Sims registered three strikeouts over his final two innings, despite yielding an RBI single to Audry Perez in the fifth. The right-hander walked two in the first inning but settled down after that, picking up his second win over his last four starts and lowering his ERA to 6.80.
Matt Tuiasosopo blasted a long home run to left-center field in the sixth, his eighth of the season, to extend the lead to its final margin. Tuiasosopo now has six extra-base hits (four doubles, two home runs) over four games on the homestand.
Sean Kazmar Jr. singled and doubled for the G-Braves, who got four strong innings of relief from their bullpen.
Dale Thayer (H, 1) allowed a run in the sixth before Jose Ramirez (H, 2) and Bradley Roney (S, 1) yielded only three hits over the final 3.0 innings to close it out. Roney picked up his first save for Gwinnett and third of the season.
Xavier Avery went 3-for-5 to collect a third of Norfolk's hits and Perez was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Additon allowed four runs on six hits in 5.0 innings, losing for the fourth time in a row.
The G-Braves and Tides continue the three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Lucas Harrell (2-1, 3.71) will pitch for the G-Braves against righty David Hale (0-3, 5.65) for Norfolk. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM at 6:35 p.m.
