Eighth Inning Outburst Carries Toledo to Win

June 10, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens continued their road trip to Rochester, New York on Friday to take on the Red Wings in game one of a three game set. Both offenses took center stage in a good old-fashioned slugfest as the two teams combined for sixteen runs on twenty-three hits. The Toledo bats were quiet for a majority of the evening until the eighth in which they hit around, scoring seven runs and taking a 9-5 lead for the win.

Buck Farmer had a rough night on the bump as the right-hander went into Friday still looking for his first Toledo win of the season. However, the Rochester offense had other ideas bringing around three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The half inning was highlighted with a triple off the bat of Kennys Vargas deep enough to score both James Beresford and Jorge Polanco. Farmer's night ended after 5.0 innings after surrendering five earned on six hits with six strikeouts.

Jason Wheeler kept the Rochester lead in tact through his six innings of work on the bump giving up two Toledo runs. Casey McGehee sent his fourth homer of the season over the wall in left to cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth.

Headed into the eighth, the Red Wings sent reliever Sean Burnett to the mound to hold down the 5-2, but it would just be the beginning of a huge eighth inning for the Toledo offense. After Steven Moya, Chad Huffman, and Casey McGehee each reached base successfully, they each scored as well on an RBI single from Tyler Collins, and a double off the bat of John Hicks. The quick three runs to take the 6-5 lead would be all the offense Burnett was around for on the mound as the lefty surrendered three earned in just 0.1 IP.

Alex Wimmers was next for the Wings, as he looked to keep the Toledo lead manageable at 6-5. However, Wimmers' efforts were also unsuccessful as three of the first four hitters reached base safely, led by a two run double from Steven Moya scoring Argenis Diaz and Dixon Machado to extend the lead to 9-5 as the lineup hit around off the Red Wings pen. The lead was all the Hens would need headed into the late innings; as Bruce Rondon came on to earn the one out save in the ninth.

Toledo and Rochester are back on the diamond Saturday night for game two of the series, with the first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
