Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: Richard Bleier and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout and Gary Sanchez fueled the offense with a homer as the RailRiders blanked the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates) at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon, 2-0. The RailRiders have won nine of 11 including a 5-2 road trip. The Indians (21-21) lost a home series to SWB for the first time in six years.
THAT'S A START: Bleier (2-2) gave up just three hits and two walks over his six innings of work, inducing a dozen groundouts along the way. The sinker southpaw boasts a 3.3:1 GO:AO ratio.
RUN PRODUCER: Bleier left with the lead thanks to Sanchez's sixth home run of the season, a two-run no-doubter to left in the sixth inning off of the Pirates No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America, Tyler Glasnow (3-2). Sanchez's home run gave him a team-best 26 RBIs, snapping a tie with Aaron Judge. Sanchez also recorded his third stolen base of the season when he swiped second in the fourth inning. He ranks among the IL's best in doubles (2nd, 13), extra-base hits (2nd, 20), slugging percentage (4th, .529) and RBIs (T-3rd). With Sanchez behind the plate, the team has gone 20-11 with a 2.60 ERA. Would-be base stealers have been nabbed 47% of the time with him catching, making him second in the IL.
BULLISH 'PEN: Newcomer Neal Cotts tossed a perfect seventh in his SWB debut, James Pazos logged a scoreless and hitless eighth and Mark Montgomery worked around a Willy Garcia single in the ninth for his second save. Both of Montgomery's saves have come against Indianapolis in each of his last two outings. He had three total saves spread over his first three seasons and 54 outings with the RailRiders from 2013-15.
TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: Al Pedrique's club earned its sixth shutout win. Only Indianapolis (8) has amassed more shutout triumphs in the IL.
I'M JUST A CAVE MAN: In 11 games with this year's RailRiders, Jake Cave has gone 14-for-43 with eight extra-base hits, eight RBIs and nine runs scored, slashing .326/.341/.651/.992 with just six strikeouts. He has played either center or left field in each game and has yet to make an error with SWB this season.
KINGS OF THE NORTH: The entire IL North was off on Monday. The defending division champion RailRiders entered today in sole possession of first place in the North, tied in the loss column with Rochester and Lehigh Valley. SWB co-leads the IL in wins with Columbus.
SLUGGING LOUSIVILLE: When the RailRiders and Bats met in Louisville last week, SWB won three of four at Louisville for the fourth straight season. The RailRiders outscored the Bats 30-7, outhit them .246-.194, and posted a 1.74 ERA to Louisville's 4.22 on the series. Louisville amassed 21 hits (4XBH) for a .231 slugging percentage while SWB bashed 30 hits (10XBH) for a .385 slugging percentage. The RailRiders nearly had as many homers (3) as the Bats did base hits (4) in the 9-1 finale. Last year's SWB squad took the season series with Louisville (5-3) for the first time since 2011. However, last year's unit split the four-game set at PNC Field. SWB hasn't won a home series against Louisville since 2011. The last sweep came in 2010.
