Norfolk Splits Doubleheader with Gwinnett

Dariel Alvarez singled home Mike Yastrzemski with a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, leading Norfolk to a 2-1 walk-off win over the Gwinnett Braves in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday night at Harbor Park. Gwinnett edged Norfolk in the opener, 3-2.

The Tides and Braves went to extras knotted at 1-1 before Alvarez gave Norfolk its second walk-off win of the season. Yastrzemski opened the eighth inning by working an eight-pitch walk from Matt Marksberry (0-1), then stole second as L.J. Hoes struck out against Jose Ramirez. Alvarez then grounded a sharp single up the middle and Yastrzemski easily beat the throw home, giving Norfolk its third win over its last four contests.

Yastrzemski finished the doubleheader 4-6 with a home run, double, walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored. He now has four consecutive multi-hit games and is batting .424 (14-33) with eight extra-base hits and seven RBI over his first nine games at the Triple-A level.

The game-winning single continued a torrid stretch at the plate for Alvarez, who has now batted .375 (18-48) with seven doubles and 10 RBI over his last 12 contests. His RBI Tuesday gave him 19 in May, most in the International League.

Game two starter Andy Oliver continued his strong stretch on the mound, as he allowed one run on three hits over five innings while taking a no-decision. Making his third start of the year (in 12 appearances), Oliver walked one and struck out four while throwing 40 of his season-high 58 pitches for strikes. He now owns a 1.14 ERA this season, including a 0.49 ERA (1 ER, 18.1 IP) over six outings in May.

Richard Rodriguez (4-1) earned the win with a shutout inning of relief.

In the opener, Gwinnett took advantage of a key error to plate three fourth inning runs in a 3-2 win over the Tides.

The Braves trailed 1-0 entering the fourth frame, but Adonis Garcia opened the inning by reaching on an error from Ozzie Martinez, then moved to third on a double by Blake Lalli. After a sac fly tied the score at 1-1, Ronnier Mustelier doubled home Lalli to give the Braves the lead, then Gwinnett extended their advantage one out later on an RBI single from Emilio Bonifacio. Two of the three runs the Braves scored in the inning were unearned.

Norfolk starter David Hale (0-2) took the loss after allowing yielding the three runs (one earned) on six hits over 4.2 innings of work. Hale walked two and struck out a pair but needed 92 pitches to navigate his outing. He's now winless in five starts with Norfolk despite owning a 3.32 ERA.

Yastrzemski homered and doubled to pace Norfolk's four-hit attack, while Trey Mancini added an RBI single.

The two clubs conclude their three-game series Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05. Ariel Miranda (1-3, 3.54) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Lucas Sims (0-3, 5.46).

Notes: Prior to Tuesday's game, LHP T.J. McFarland was placed on Norfolk's disabled list, retro to May 21, with a left knee injury...Major League umpire Phil Cuzzi served as the home plate umpire in game two as part of a rehab assignment...Michael Almanzar had a seven-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-3 effort in the opener before collecting two hits in the nightcap...Zach Phillips struck out four over 2.1 shutout innings of relief in game one.
