Balanced Offensive Attack Highlights Win

May 24, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens were back in town Tuesday night to take on the visiting Durham Bulls on a beautiful night at Fifth Third field. Getting the nod for Toledo was left hander Chad Bell, who was looking for his second win of the season. On the mound for the Bulls was a familiar face, as former Hen Adam Wilk took the ball against his former squad.

Wilk was in for a rude awakening from the get go on the bump as the Toledo bats sizzled in the first. Dixon machado singled to center to get things rolling, and came all the way around to score on a scorching triple off the bat of Chad Huffman. The three bagger was Huffman's fourth of the season. Casey McGehee added to the early lead sending Machado home on a sac fly to center.

In the second, Wilk retired Miguel Gonzalez and Argenis Diaz as he looked to be cruising. However, Hens' backstop John Hicks had other ideas as he sent a Wilk fastball over the wall in left field, extending the lead to 3-0.

Chad Bell had himself an effectively wild night on the mound against the Bulls. The southpaw escaped two separate jams in the first and third innings, and kept Durham scoreless. Bell's most effective frame came in the fifth when he retired Luke Malie, Jaff Decker, and Dayron Varona in order. The Knoxville native's night ended after the fifth as he exited with a final line of 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 K. Bell picked up the win as the southpaw moved to 2-0 on the season.

In the six the Hens picked up right where they left off as Casey McGehee extended his hit streak to nine games on a sharp single to right. Tyler Collins followed the knock with one of his own sending McGehee first to third on the play. With runners threatening on the corners, Miguel Gonzalez struck a fly ball to center that looked to be a three run shot, until Durham's Jaff Decker raced to the warning track to make the grab. The sac fly sent McGehee across the plate to make it 4-0.

Bell's effort on the bump was backed by solid relief performances from Angel Nesbitt, Logan Kensing, Blaine Hardy, and Preston Guilmet. Kensing provided the most impressive outing throwing one frame, and striking out two. Hens' pitching found its way out of multiple jams Tuesday evening as the Durham offense left eight men on base and went 0-11 with runners in scoring position.

Toledo and Durham turn right around bright and early tomorrow as Wednesday's first pitch is set for 10:35 am. Right hander Shane Greene will take the mound for Toledo, as he makes his second minor league start of his rehab assignment.
