Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (24-20) had the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth, but fell to the Pawtucket Red Sox (22-23) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.
Trailing 2-1, the Pigs had runners at first and second with one out in the top of the ninth, but RHP Pat Light (1.0 IP, H, BB, K) got Cedric Hunter to fly out and fanned Darnell Sweeney to end the game and pick up his third save of the year.
Chris Marrero's two-run shot off of RHP Frank Herrmann with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave Pawtucket a 2-1 lead. Herrmann (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, K) was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.
In eight games against the Pigs this season, Marrero is hitting .484-4-12 (15-31).
RHP Anthony Varvaro (1.0 IP, H, BB, 2 K) earned the win for the PawSox and is now 2-1 on the year.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth as Pigs starter Zach Eflin and PawSox starter Eduardo Rodriguez traded zeroes.
Eflin (n/d) allowed four hits while walking one and fanning six in his seven innings of work.
In the top of the fifth, Cam Perkins crushed a solo shot off of Rodriguez to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead. The home run was Perkins' second of the season.
Rodriguez (n/d) gave up the one run on four hits while fanning seven over his seven innings of work in a rehab start for Pawtucket.
The series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP David Buchanan (2-2, 3.92) will be on the bump for the Pigs against Red Sox LHP Roenis Elias (1-3, 4.96).
