Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, VA - In a doubleheader where each game was decided by one run, the Gwinnett Braves (23-24) and Norfolk Tides (17-30) settled for a split. The G-Braves used a three-run top of the third to win game one by a 3-2 score, and the Tides got a walk-off, 2-1 victory in eight innings win in game two.
In the first game, after a first-inning RBI single by Trey Mancini off Tyrell Jenkins gave the Tides a 1-0 lead, the G-Braves roared back for three in the fourth off former G-Brave David Hale.
An error by Norfolk shortstop Ozzie Martinez on a ball hit by Adonis Garcia began the inning. Blake Lalli then pounded a double to center field, moving Garcia to third. Rio Ruiz plated Garcia with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game 1-1.
Ronnier Mustelier then doubled into the gap in left-center, plating Lalli for a 2-1 G-Braves' advantage. The final run came off the bat of Emilio Bonifacio as he singled to right, scoring Mustelier.
The Tides cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Yastrzemski hit a solo homer to right off Jenkins, bringing Norfolk within 3-2. But Chris Withrow (S, 5) nailed down the win with a perfect bottom of the seventh.
In game two, Gwinnett took the early lead off Norfolk starter Andy Oliver in the top of the second. Garcia doubled to left, moved to third on a single by Mustelier and then scored when Brandon Snyder shot a single to left.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, a costly error got Norfolk back in the game. With starter John Gant pitching for the G-Braves, a one-out throwing error by Ozzie Albies allowed Francisco Pena to reach first base. A single by Michael Almanzar moved Pena to third and then a wild pitch on a strikeout of L.J. Hoes enabled Pena to score the tying run.
The game moved to extra innings, where in the bottom of the eighth Matt Marksberry walked Yastrzemski and was replaced by Jose Ramirez. After a strikeout of Mancini, Yastrzemski stole second and scored the winning run on a single to center by Dariel Alvarez.
In game one, Jenkins (W, 5-2) went the first 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out a season-high nine. Withrow struck out one in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Gant tossed 6.0 innings in game two for the G-Braves, scattering seven hits and allowing just one unearned run. He also struck out a season-high nine and did not walk a batter. Ryan Weber worked a scoreless inning of relief before Marksberry (L, 0-1) walked the only batter he faced in the decisive eighth inning. Ramirez allowed a hit and registered a strikeout in 0.1 innings.
Hale (L, 0-2) went 4.2 innings in the first game for Norfolk, giving up six hits and three runs (one earned). He walked two and struck out two before Zach Phillips tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief racking up four strikeouts.
In the second game, Oliver gave the Tides 5.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out four. Pedro Beato worked 1.0 inning, yielding a hit and two walks and Oliver Drake struck out one over his 1.0 inning of relief. Richard Rodriguez (W, 4-1) pitched the top of the eighth, allowing a hit, to get the win.
At the plate in game one for Gwinnett, Ruiz was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Garcia was 1-for-3 with a run. Lalli and Mustelier each went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Mustelier doubled and drove in a run. In game two, Snyder was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Garcia went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
In game one for Norfolk, Yastrzemski went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and scored both runs. He was 2-for-3 in the second game, scoring the winning run.
The G-Braves and Tides conclude the three-game series in Norfolk Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. Righty Lucas Sims (0-3, 5.46) starts for Gwinnett while the Tides counter with left-hander Ariel Miranda (1-3, 3.54).
