Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
DUEL WINNERS: The RailRiders slipped past the Syracuse Chiefs 2-1 on Sunday. SWB took three-of-four in the set against the Nationals' top farm club. Chad Green gave the RailRiders six scoreless innings in the start. Rob Refsnyder staked the RailRiders a 1-0 lead in the first by scoring Judge on a single. With the bases loaded, Judge launched the game-winning sac fly to right in the ninth.
NICE START: The RailRiders posted seven victories in their first 10 games and are coming off a 6-1 week. Of teams who have played 10 or more games, only the Gwinnett Braves (9-2) are off to a better start in the IL. The Toledo Mud Hens are 5-1, but three games against Louisville postponed due to snow.
GO GREEN: Despite taking a no decision, right-hander Chad Green had his best outing with SWB in his third start on Sunday, blanking the Chiefs of six frames. He worked around six hits and a walk while striking out a season-high five. Coupled with his outing at Pawtucket, Green has weaved together 9.2 scoreless innings and his 1.32 ERA is 10th best in the IL.
SLAMMING THE GAVEL: On Sunday, Aaron Judge extended his hitting streak to three games with a first-inning single. Judge cracked his first home run of the year out to right on Friday. Through nine games, he has slashed .342/.366/.500/.866 by going 13-for-38 with four extra-base hits. His 13 hits are tied for fourth most in the IL. He has been particularly effective against right-handed pitchers (10-for-25, 3XBH, .400/.429/.600/1.029). Judge has hit second in all nine of the team's games thus far, something he did in just 10 of his 61 games played at Triple-A a season ago. Most of his SWB time last year came in the four (21 games) or five-hole (27 games). However, he mostly hit second at Double-A in 2015 (30 games) and at both levels his best performances came in the two hole. At Double-A last year he slashed .310/.370/.579/.949 batting second. At Triple-A, the numbers stood .333/.413/.385/.798.
SWISHALICIOUS: Nick Swisher signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and joined the RailRiders last Thursday. Over a dozen MLB seasons, including four with the Yankees from 2009-12, he has hit .249/.351/.447/.799. An All-Star with the Yankees in 2010 when he hit .288/.359/.511/.870 with 29 home runs, he was last in the big leagues last season with both Cleveland and Atlanta. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single Thursday night as the starting first baseman. Friday, he went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead double in the sixth as the DH. Saturday, he went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and one strikeout.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder drove in a run for the second straight game on Sunday with a single. His first-inning hit stretched SWB's longest hitting streak of 2016 to eight games. He plated two runs with a sac fly and an RBI single on Saturday. Only Charlotte's Carlos Sanchez, with an active 10-gamer entering today, has authored a longer string of swinging success in the IL this season.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: The RailRiders played their eighth error-free game of the season Sunday. The club authored a seven-game stretch from April 8-15 without a miscue and own a league-best .994 fielding percentage. Last year's unit finished fifth in the league with a .982 fielding percentage. The franchise last led the league in fielding percentage at .983 when it did not have a home stadium en route to a division title in 2012.
OFF THE RAILS: Reliever Tyler Webb notched his first win of 2016 by recording the final out of the eighth inning on Sunday...Nick Goody worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to post a scoreless frame and his first save...Since surrendering a home run in each of his first two outings, Goody has made two scoreless appearances and struck out five...After going hitless in his first five starts, infielder Pete Kozma has quietly put together a four-game hitting streak...three of his last four hits have been doubles...SWB's team 2.43 team ERA ranks fourth in the IL behind Syracuse (1.76), Toledo (1.96) and Indianapolis (2.31).
