Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (5-5) picked up their third straight win with a 5-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs (5-5) on Monday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Pigs starter Mark Appel (2-0) gave up just one run on five hits to go along with two walks and six strikeouts in six plus innings of work.
Andrew Knapp's two-run shot in the home half of the first off of Chiefs starter Austin Voth gave the Pigs a 2-0 lead. It was Knapp's second homer of the season.
In the bottom of the third, Darnell Sweeney (2-3, HR, RBI, R, SB) delivered with a solo shot to right to open up a 3-0 advantage for the IronPigs. The round-tripper was Sweeney's first of the year.
Knapp (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) led off with a single in the fourth, moved to third on a double and scored on Will Venable's RBI groundout to give the Pigs a 4-0 lead.
Voth (0-1) allowed four runs on eight hits while fanning six over his six innings of work.
Syracuse cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth as Pedro Severino reached via a one-out single, advanced to third on a pair of singles and scored on Voth's RBI groundout.
Trailing 4-1, the Chiefs had the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh, but RHP Luis Garcia (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K) fanned Jason Martinson and got Trea Turner to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and end the threat.
In the home half of the seventh, Venable led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Ryan Jackson's RBI groundout to give the Pigs a 5-1 lead.
Lehigh Valley's Taylor Featherston (2-4, 2B, R) extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the first. Cam Perkins (2-3, 2B) also had a multi-hit game for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
LHP Bobby LaFromboise (1.0 IP, H, BB, K) tossed a scoreless inning in relief for the Pigs.
The series wraps up on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as IronPigs RHP David Buchanan (0-0, 5.40) will be on the bump against Syracuse RHP Taylor Jordan (0-0, 0.82).
