The International League announced today that Syracuse shortstop Trea Turner and Lehigh Valley pitcher Zach Eflin have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 11-Â17.  Turner is the first member of the Chiefs to claim an IL weekly award since Kevin Keyes (June 15-Â21, 2015), while Eflin is the first IronPig to be so honored since Jerad Eickhoff (Aug. 3-Â9, 2015).
TREA TURNER, Syracuse Chiefs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
This week Chiefs shortstop Trea Turner showed why MLB.com rates him as one of the game's top ten prospects as he batted .433 and led the International League with 13 hits and 19 total bases.  Turner went 4-Âfor-Â4 with a double and an RBI in a 4-Â3 win over Buffalo Tuesday, then reeled off back-Âto-Âback three-Âhit games later in the week against Scranton/Wilkes-ÂBarre.  Saturday's tilt included his first long ball of the season to go along with three runs scored.  So far on the young season, Turner is near the top of the IL in several offensive categories.  He's currently 2nd in the League in hits, on-Âbase percentage, stolen bases, and runs scored, while he's 4th overall in hitting with a .424 average.  22-Âyear-Âold Trea Turner is in his third season as a professional player.  He was selected by San Diego in the 1st round of the 2014 draft and was acquired by Washington in a three-Âteam trade in 2015.  He made his Major League debut for the Nationals last season, hitting .225 in 27 games.  Turner is a native of Boynton Beach, Florida.
ZACH EFLIN, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Zach Eflin won his first two starts at the Triple-ÂA level this week, defeating the Rochester Red Wings in back-Âto-Âback outings by allowing just one run on seven hits over a League-Âbest 14.0 innings of work.  The first victory came on the road Tuesday, as Eflin led the IronPigs to a 6-Â1 win with 6.0 frames of five-Âhit, one run baseball in an impressive Lehigh Valley debut.  Back home against the Red Wings on Sunday, Eflin surrendered only a two-Âout 1st inning single and a leadoff single in the 3rd which was erased by a double play.  He then retired the last 17 batters he faced to pick up his second win of the year, a 3-Â0 blanking of Rochester.   22-Âyear-Âold Zach Eflin is in his fifth season as a professional pitcher.  He was selected by San Diego in the 1st round of the 2012 draft.  Following the 2014 season he was dealt to the Dodgers as part of the trade for Matt Kemp and subsequently dealt to Philadelphia as part of the trade for Jimmy Rollins.  Eflin had not pitched above the Double-ÂA level prior to the 2016 season.  Eflin is a native of Orlando, Florida.
