Trea Turner Named International League Batter of the Week
April 18, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs are pleased to announce that shortstop Trea Turner has been named the International League's Batter of the Week for the period from April 11-17. Turner is the first Chiefs player to be honored since Kevin Keyes (last June 15-21).
Last week, Turner lived up to his MLB.com ranking as one of the game's top prospects, batting .433 and leading the International League with 13 hits and 19 total bases. Turner went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a 4-3 win over Buffalo Tuesday, then reeled off back-to-back three-hit games later in the week against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Saturday's tilt included his first long ball of the season to go along with three runs scored. So far on the young season, Turner is near the top of the IL in several offensive categories. He's currently 2nd in the League in hits, on-base percentage, stolen bases, and runs scored, while he's 4th overall in hitting with a .424 average.
22-year-old Trea Turner is in his third season as a professional player. He was selected by San Diego in the 1st round of the 2014 draft and was acquired by Washington in a three-team trade in 2015. He made his Major League debut for the Nationals last season, hitting .225 in 27 games. Turner is a native of Boynton Beach, Florida.
Turner and the Chiefs next begin a two-game series at Lehigh Valley Monday night at 7:05. The Chiefs return home Wednesday for a 4:35 doubleheader with the IronPigs, kicking off a six-game, five-day homestand.
