Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Luis Severino (7-0) struck out a career-high 10 men and did not allow an earned run as his RailRiders handled the IronPigs, 9-4.
SENOR TRANQUILO: Severino allowed one hit and no walks over six-plus innings. Errors on the infield led to three unearned runs on his line.
SEASON-LONG DOMINANCE: In 11 Triple-A starts, Severino has a 1.91 ERA that would lead the IL if he had enough innings pitched to qualify (min. 0.8/team game). In 61.1 innings, he has struck out 50 against 17 walks while allowing just 40 hits for a .184 batting average against and 0.93 WHIP. Six of his wins have come on the road where his ERA sits over a full point lower (1.54) than it does at home (2.66). He has not allowed a home run at Triple-A. Including his Double-A time, Severino's nine composite wins pace the Yankees' farm while his 98 strikeouts trail only Advanced-A Tampa's Rookie Davis (102).
TO WHIT: Severino became the first RailRider to strike out double-digit men in one game since Chase Whitley whiffed 11 Indianapolis Indians in a May 6, 2014 win at PNC Field. Two starts later, Whitley made his Major League debut against the New York Mets.
EVEN STEVEN: SWB tied the IronRail Series at 6-6. The RailRiders took the inaugural IronRail Trophy in 2013 by virtue of a tiebreaker. The IronPigs earned the hardware with a 10-6 mark against SWB in 2014. With six head-to-head meetings left, the RailRiders must best the 'Pigs four times to take the IronRail outright, or win three times including the Aug. 28 series finale.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: Lehigh Valley's eighth-inning run went unearned on reliever Branden Pinder, spoiling the bullpen's shutout streak at 19.1 innings going back to the July 23 win at Indianapolis. SWB relievers have still yet to allow an earned run over a 22-inning span. The 'pen owns a collective 2.86 ERA compared to a 3.83 mark for the starting staff.
RAM IT: Jose Ramirez bolted down his team-best 10th save. He has only blown one save try at Triple-A this season and his 56 strikeouts in 49.2 IP make for the IL's third-best K/9 IP rate among relievers at 10.15.
ROAD WARRIOR: After reaching base in all but one of his first 18 Triple-A games with slashes of .300/.380/.486/.865 in the process, Greg Bird entered last night in an 0-for-12 funk with one walk over a three-game span. He returned to form with a 2-for-5 showing including a well-hit two-run homer to right. With a nearly even number of at-bats, he has wide home-road splits. On the road, Bird has slashed .362/.444/.638/1.083 going 17-for-47 with all of his four home runs and 13 RBIs. At home, he has slashed .150/.209/.225/.434 by going 6-for-40.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders lead the IL in batting average (.272) and OBP (.342) while slugging .386 to trail only Charlotte (.404), which plays half of its games at hitter-friendly BB&T Ballpark...SWB secured a winning July with last night's triumph...Over the first eight seasons as a Yankees affiliate, SWB logged an above .500 July six times and the two exceptions both saw the squad finish a game under sea level...The RailRiders outhit the IronPigs, 12-3, including a 6-0 advantage in extra-base hits...Lehigh Valley has lost back-to-back games for just the second time since June 28 and stands in danger of suffering its first series loss since losing two of three against Louisville from June 26-28...The 'Pigs have posted a 5-0-4 record in series play since that setback...Rob Refsnyder doubled twice and now owns the team lead in two-base hits outright at 21...Austin Romine served as the DH for second straight game and the fourth time overall this season (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, BB)...Ben Gamel extended his hitting streak to six games (2-4, HR, 2RBI, 2R, BB)...He has gone 10-for-23 (.435) during his spurt, lifting his average back up to .290...The home run was his sixth of the year...He entered 2015 with 10 career home runs in 415 games played and 1,634 at-bats.
