Bisons Lose 5-4 in Late-Inning Collapse
Published on July 30, 2015 under International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Amid the departure of two Herd starting pitchers earlier on Thursday, the Bisons had to prove their pitching staff is still a threat in the International League. And so they did, only for the bullpen to be the teams' downfall.
The Bisons finished off a four-game series with a 5-4 heartbreaking loss to the Chiefs on Thursday night. Buffalo relief allowed five earned runs - four in the ninth - after not allowing a run in the first 8 1/3 innings to cap off the series. Syracuse and Buffalo split the series with two wins apiece. The Herd is now 16-25 in one-run games.
Before the ninth inning began, the Herd held a 4-0 lead, but a huge rally in the frame allowed Syracuse to tie the game. Joba Chamberlain had his worst outing with Buffalo. He pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up four earned runs on four hits in the ninth inning.
In the 10th, Bobby Korecky allowed a single to the right field side that scored the winning run in walk-off style. It was Korecky's fourth blown save of the season.
The game almost ended in the ninth inning, but a perfectly executed relay to home saved the Bisons for the time being. Ty Kelly threw a ball into Jon Berti, who then fired the ball to Sean Ochinko to apply the tag on Tony Gwynn Jr. to end the inning and preserve the tie game.
In the last week, it's been Buffalo's offense, who has averaged close to seven runs in the past week, that has propelled the team. On Thursday, it was the starting pitching.
Earlier on Thursday, highly revered Bisons prospects Matt Boyd and Daniel Norris were traded by the Blue Jays to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for David Price. Boyd was supposed to start Thursday's game, but was pulled due to the news.
Todd Redmond was awarded the spot-start, and earned a no-decision behind a short, yet effective outing. Redmond went four innings, but did not allow a run on three hits, but did surrender three walks. Redmond has worked out of the bullpen as of late, but did not show signs of fatigue in his first start since July 8 against Rochester.
Syracuse threatened only once during Redmond's outing due to a one-out triple in the first inning by Trea Turner. Redmond, however, was able to strike out consecutive batters to escape the jam. It was two of the veteran's four strikeouts on the night.
The Bisons had an admirable night at the plate, but evidentially wasn't enough in the end. Buffalo accumulated 10 hits and had four players record multi-hit games. Matt Hague went 2-for-4 and and added two RBI in the top of the ninth. The MVP candidate how has a .353 average and a team-high 75 RBI. Andy Burns, Alex Hassan and Ochinko were the other players to reach the feat.
Buffalo will look to rebound from a tough loss back at home when it opens a three-game series with Pawtucket, beginning on Friday and lasting throughout the weekend. Friday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
Bisons Notes: Andy Burns went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to seven games ... the Bisons picked up only their seventh loss of the year when they score first
