Charlotte Knights News Release
(LOUISVILLE, KY) - Infielder Justin Sellers, who has appeared in parts of four seasons in the majors from 2011 through 2014, has been acquired via trade by the Chicago White Sox today and assigned to the Charlotte Knights. Sellers, who was a member of the Indianapolis Indians (Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) at the time of the trade, will be active for tonight's finale from Louisville, KY. Sellers takes the roster spot of Charlotte 2B Micah Johnson, who was placed on the team's disabled list. Charlotte's roster is now at 24 active players.
Johnson is hitting .328 over 66 games with the Knights, which is currently the second-best mark in the International League. The 24-year-old is also tied for second in the IL in OBP (.383), second in slugging percentage (.487), and tied for fourth in stolen bases (26). In 27 games during the month of July, the Indianapolis native is hitting .378 with 42 hits, 26 runs, eight doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 11 SBs.
Sellers, a native of Bellflower, CA, was acquired for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The 29-year-old infielder, who was originally drafted by the Oakland A's in the sixth round of the 2005 draft, has appeared in four games with Indianapolis this season and was hitting .100 (1-for-10). He has also appeared in seven games for the GCL Pirates and five games for Bradenton (A+) this year.
For his career, Sellers, who is the son of former major leaguer Jeff Sellers, has compiled a .267 batting average with 54 home runs and 403 RBIs over parts of 11 minor league seasons (948 games). In four seasons at the major league level, Sellers has appeared in 99 games and has compiled a .198 batting average with three home runs and 17 RBIs.
The Knights and Louisville Bats will conclude their four-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m. from Louisville Slugger Field. RHP Kyle Drabek (5-5, 2.59) will start the game for the Knights against LHP Brandon Finnegan for the Bats. Finnegan, who was acquired by the Reds in the trade for RHP Johnny Cueto, will make his Bats debut tonight. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
