Syracuse, NY (7/30/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bisons in walkoff fashion, 5-4, on Thursday night in ten innings. The Chiefs scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and Steve Lerud secured the win with a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth.
Syracuse (42-65) and Buffalo were locked in a pitchers' duel for most of the game. Chiefs starter Taylor Jordan threw six shutout innings, striking out four and allowing four hits. On the other side, Bisons starter Todd Redmond pitched four strong innings, giving up three hits and also striking out four batters.
Buffalo (55-51) got on the board first, scoring in the top of the seventh inning. Scott McGregor came in to relieve Jordan and promptly gave up a walk to Ty Kelly. Melky Mesa then hit a grounder to second, where Josh Johnson tossed to Trea Turner on second base to get the out. Turner dropped the ball on the transfer, allowing Mesa to reach first. After a fly out, catcher Sean Ochinko doubled to right field, driving in Mesa for the game's first run. In the next at-bat, Jonathan Diaz singled to right, scoring Ochinko and giving the Bisons a 2-0 lead.
The Bisons added two runs in the top of the ninth. Paul Demny came in as the Chiefs' fourth pitcher of the night. With two men on and two outs, Andy Burns reached on an infield single, loading the bases. Matt Hague, the league leader in batting average, then lined a single to center, scoring Jon Berti from third and Dalton Pompey from second to double the Bisons lead to 4-0.
The Chiefs rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Joba Chamberlain made his second appearance in as many days to try to close out the game. Caleb Ramsey and Johnson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fly out, Darin Mastroianni singled to load the bases. The next batter, Turner, singled to right field, driving in Ramsey and Johnson, and bringing the Chiefs within two runs. Bobby Korecky came in to replace Chamberlain and retired the first batter he faced. With two outs and runners on first and second, Tony Gwynn, Jr., singled to center to score Mastroianni. Continuing the rally, first baseman Matt Skole laced a double down the right-field line to score Turner from second and tie the game at four. Gwynn, Jr., was thrown out at the plate on the play.
Syracuse only needed one extra frame before taking home the win. After striking out the first batter, Korecky surrendered a single to Ramsey and then a walk to Johnson. With runners on first and second, Lerud hit a sharp ground ball into right field. In a close play at the plate, Ramsey slid head-first, beating the tag and giving the Chiefs a 5-4 victory.
The Chiefs hit the road on Friday to face the Rochester Red Wings with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Paolo Espino will get the start for Syracuse opposing left-hander Taylor Rogers.
