Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (47-59) dropped their third straight game with a 3-2 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (59-48) on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Pigs had the tying run at second with nobody out in the frame but were unable to push the tying run across.
Gary Sanchez's two-run homer in the top of the second gave the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. It was Sanchez's second home run of the year for manager Dave Miley's squad.
Sanchez's RBI double in the top of the third extended the lead to 3-0.
Pigs starter Cesar Jimenez (2-5) gave up the three runs on five hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout over three innings of work.
In the home half of the fourth, a walk and a single put two men on and nobody out for the Pigs before Chris McGuiness grounded into a force out and a throwing error on the play by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre SS Gregorio Petit allowed Erik Kratz to scamper home from third and cut the lead to 3-1.
Making his first career appearance above High-A, RailRiders starter Chaz Hebert (1-0) allowed one run on four hits while walking one and fanning four in 5.0 IP.
RHP Johnny Barbato (1.0 IP, K) retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his second save of the year for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The IronPigs cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the seventh as KC Serna struck out, advanced to first on a wild pitch and to second on a throwing error by Sanchez which set the table for Tyler Henson's (3-5, 2 2B, RBI) RBI double off the wall in right field.
Over the last two games, Henson has five of Lehigh Valley's eight hits.
RHP Dustin McGowan (4.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K) and LHP Adam Loewen (2.0 IP, BB, 4 K) combined to toss six shutout innings of relief for the Pigs.
Lehigh Valley opens a three-game set with the Norfolk Tides at Coca-Cola Park on Friday night as RHP Jason Berken (5-7, 3.50) gets the ball for the IronPigs against Norfolk LHP Chris Jones (6-5, 2.78).
