IL1 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

SWB Game Notes

July 18, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders scored the game's last four runs including three in the ninth to best the Bats on Friday night, 4-1.

MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD: Starter Esmil Rogers tossed a season-best seven innings of one-run ball. He struck out three and walked one. It marked his first quality start since his final outing as a Buffalo Bison on July 18, 2014 at Pawtucket (6IP, 6H, 3R, 2BB, 3K).

MY FAVORITE MARTIN: Chris Martin recorded his first Triple-A save of the season with a scoreless ninth. He also recorded a save for the Yankees against Tampa Bay on April 28 in the Bronx. All four Yankees pitchers that day have some time with SWB this season: starting pitcher/victor Chase Whitley and relievers Chasen Shreve, Rogers and Martin. Since a rough loss at Lehigh Valley on June 30 (1.2IP, 5H, 6R, 3BB, 2K) Martin has allowed just one unearned run over his last five outings and eight innings (6H, 1BB, 7K).

THREEPEAT?: The RailRiders have won three straight games for the first time since a six-game win streak from June 8-13. The team has only won back-to-back games four times since that spurt, including this current run.

FOR THE RECORD: The RailRiders recorded their second win of the season when trailing after seven innings. Every other IL team has multiple wins in such circumstances. SWB's only other win when trailing after seven came versus Durham on May 21 when a 1-0 deficit after seven became 3-0 in the eighth. The home half of that inning saw run-scoring contact from Ramon Flores, Rob Refsnyder and Tyler Austin to deadlock the game. In the 10th, Ben Gamel's two-out single to deep center plated Refsnyder with the walk-off winner.

GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: After going 2-5 last homestand, the RailRiders stand eight games below .500 at PNC Field (21-29) and 14 games over on the road (29-15). The team has hit .283 on the road compared to a .262 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 235 runs in 44 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 182 runs in 50 games (3.6/game). The pitching has performed worse on the road (3.58 ERA) than at home (3.44 ERA). No IL team has a better road win percentage than the RailRiders (.659), who have won 22 of 30 away from Moosic.

GETTING FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa delivered his team-best 33rd multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. He has posted multiple knocks in 12 of his last 14 Triple-A games. Since an 0-for-3 effort at Norfolk on May 11 lowered his average to .184, Figueroa has slashed .392/.431/.528/.959 with those numbers ranking 1st/2nd/4th/3rd in the IL. On the season, he checks in among the IL's best in batting average (2nd, .323), hits (4th, 96) and plate appearance:strikeout ratio (1st, 19.47:1).

OLE JOSE: Jose Pirela went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI, a walk and a run scored. He entered the series in a 2-for-12 (.167) funk since rejoining the team from the bigs and in a 10-for-54 (.185) slide at Triple-A overall. He has gone 6-for-9 on the series with two doubles and three RBIs.

GUILTY AS CHARGED: Aaron Judge made his second professional start in center field, a position he played while attending Fresno State. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Through his first seven Triple-A games, Judge was 4-for-25 (.160/.267/.320/.587). In 14 games since, he has gone 18-for-55 (.327/.400/.418/.818).

OFF THE RAILS: Only Toledo (8) has lost more IL games than Louisville (6) this season when leading after seven innings...Kyle Roller received his team-high third intentional walk in the eighth inning...Tyler Austin went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and sits in a 3-for-20 slump with six whiffs in his modest five games played since June 25...The RailRiders and Bats rank first and second in the IL in batting average (.273/.264) and on-base percentage (.341/.333)...Louisville has the IL's second-worst fielding percentage (.977) and error total (81) including three errors on this series and two unearned runs last night...The Bats also by far lead the loop in double plays turned (115).
