Rochester Red Wings News Release

Aaron Altherr's eighth inning home run gave the Lehigh Valley IronPigs a 4-2 win over the Rochester Red Wings Saturday night at Frontier Field. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost to Louisville, so the first place Red Wings maintain their half-game lead over the RailRiders.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m., featuring a visit from Thomas and Friends and Latino Day with a post-game concert. Complete promotion details below...

Wings' right hander Jose Berrios took the mound for his second start against Lehigh Valley this season and got some early defensive assistance in the first inning. Danny Ortiz made a diving play in the right center gap for the first out of the ball game. Berrios set down the next two batters with a swinging strikeout and groundout to short.

Opposing starter Sean O'Sullivan made his first Triple-A start for the IronPigs this season after the right hander was sent down to Lehigh Valley from Philadelphia on July 7th. After a swinging strikeout to open the bottom of the first, James Beresford doubled over the center fielder's head. Chris Herrmann followed with a fly out to center that moved Beresford to third, however O'Sullivan worked himself out of trouble with a ground out that ended the inning.

Berrios retired the first two batters in the top of the second inning via swinging strikeout and ground out, but surrendered a solo home run to Jordan Danks that gave the IronPigs an early 1-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley continued to pressure the Wings' starter in the top of the third inning. Following a swinging strikeout, Chase d'Arnaud tripled to the left center gap and crossed the plate to score from a sacrifice fly by Tyler Henson which pushed the lead to 2-0.

The Wings battled back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a lead off walk to Herrmann. After a fly out and pop out, Ortiz smacked his 10th home run of the season to tie the score at 2-2.

Rochester's offense returned in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles by Oswaldo Arcia and Reynaldo Rodriguez. O'Sullivan worked himself out of trouble with a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts.

O'Sullivan's night came to an end after the sixth inning. The right hander allowed six hits, two earned runs, two walks, struck out four batters. Seth Rosin entered the game to pitch the bottom of the seventh.

Berrios exited the mound after seven innings pitched, giving up three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out an impressive nine batters. He threw 101 pitches, 66 for strikes. Alex Meyer took over on the mound for Rochester.

Lehigh Valley put pressure on Meyer (3-5) to start the top of the eighth with a lead off base hit by Devin Lohman. After back-to-back strikeouts, Altherr drove a two-run home run over the left field wall, pushing across Lohman to give the IronPigs a 4-2 advantage.

The Wings set the stage for a comeback in the bottom of the eighth when Dustin McGowan gave up back-to-back-to-back walks to Rodriguez, Ortiz and Jose Martinez with two outs. Doug Bernier worked the count to 3-2, but then struck out swinging to end the inning.

Caleb Thielbar pitched the ninth inning, striking out two.

Against Adam Loewen in the bottom of the ninth, the Wings went down in order with Loewen picking up his seventh save. Rosin (4-1) picked up the win in relief.

Eric Farris had two of the Red Wings' seven hits.
