Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (7/18/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Gwinnett Braves, 11-8, on Saturday night. Josh Johnson had two hits and two RBIs and Chris Nelson went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Gwinnett (46-47) got on the board right away against Syracuse starter A.J. Cole in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Mallex Smith, back-to-back singles loaded the bases. With no outs, third baseman Adonis Garcia singled to center and drove in Smith to give the Braves an early 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (37-58) scored its first run in the bottom of the second. Nelson led off the inning with a walk. After a fly out, catcher Dan Butler singled to right field, pushing Nelson to third base. Tony Gwynn, Jr., then grounded into a double play, but Nelson scored before the tag was applied at second for the final out, tying the game at one.
The Braves answered with a run of their own in the top of the third. With one out, Eric Young, Jr., and Garcia hit back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners. The next batter, Sean Kazmar, hit a sacrifice fly to right field, deep enough to score Young, Jr., giving Gwinnett a 2-1 lead.
The Chiefs responded and then took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Darin Mastroianni and Trea Turner both reached with one-out singles. With Ricky Hague batting, Mastroianni and Turner stole third and second, respectively. Hague then singled to center, scoring Mastroianni and advancing Turner to third. In the next at-bat, a ball got by the catcher Jose Yepez, allowing Turner to score on the passed ball, putting the Chiefs up 3-2.
The game was quiet until the sixth inning when Gwinnett scored again. Right fielder Todd Cunningham led off the inning with a double, and then moved to third on a groundout. The next batter, Daniel Castro, also grounded out, but Cunningham scored on the play, tying the game at three.
Gwinnett broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning. Jose Peraza led off the inning with a bunt single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Young, Jr. After reliever Bruce Billings intentionally walked Garcia, Kazmar singled to center, driving in Peraza. Following a hit batter, Yepez singled to center and scored Garcia. Eric Fornataro then came in to replace Billings and immediately gave up a two-run double to Castro. After a fly out, Mallex Smith singled to center, scoring Yepez. Peraza reached on an infield single allowing Castro to score. A throwing error by Turner allowed Smith to score, giving the Braves a 10-3 lead.
The Braves added another run to their total in the top of the eighth. Garcia singled to start the inning and moved to second after a walk. Cunningham then grounded into a force out, which let Garcia take third. Garcia then scored on a Yepez sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 11-3.
Syracuse mounted a small comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Kevin Keyes and Nelson began the rally with singles to left, putting runners on the corners with none out. Pinch hitter Caleb Ramsey singled to score Keyes. After a pop out, Tony Gwynn, Jr., doubled down the right-field line to score Nelson. Matt Marksberry entered the game to replace Braves reliever Peter Moylan and gave up a two-run single to Johnson, bringing the score to 11-7.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Chiefs tacked on another run. Trea Turner walked to start the inning. After another walk and a double play, Turner was on third. Chris Nelson singled to center, driving in Turner and making the score 11-8. David Peterson came in to pitch and struck out Jason Martinson to close out the game.
The Chiefs look to secure a series victory Sunday morning against the Braves. Syracuse will send right-hander Paolo Espino to the mound to face right-hander Alex White with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m.
