
Owens Pitches PawSox to Second Straight Win

(Durham, NC) - Henry Owens earned his first win since May 5th and Jackie Bradley Jr. went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs to lead the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Durham Bulls on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The PawSox ripped 12 more hits won a second straight game for the first time since June 28.
Owens did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning, struck out nine - including four straight during a stretch where he retired eight straight - walked just two and was charged with only one run, which scored after Owens had left the game.
For the third straight game, the PawSox took the lead first on Quintin Berry's third-inning sacrifice fly. Durham's Matt Andriese (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, despite a quality start. Andriese worked six innings , allowed seven hits and struck out seven.
Pawtucket's big inning came in the seventh inning off Everett Teaford. Jemile Weeks and Mike Miller (3-for-4) set up the inning with singles. Berry drove in his second run on a bouncing ball to second; Ryan Brett threw the ball to put PawSox at second and third. Bradley, Jr. then ripped a two-run single to make it a 4-0 lead.
Owens allowed a leadoff double in the seventh to the last hitter he faced, Corey Brown. Matt Barnes struck out Richie Shaffer, uncorked a wild pitch and yielded a sacrifice fly that got the Bulls on the board with two outs. Two walks and a single put the tying runs on base, but Barnes induced a groundout to keep the Sox in front.
Pawtucket added its fifth run on Matt Spring's pinch-hit homer in the eighth. Spring's blast was the PawSox' first pinch-hit homer since June 7, 2006 when Jeff Bailey hit a grand slam in Indianapolis.
Heath Hembree pitched a perfect eighth inning and Ronald Belisario sent the Bulls down in order in the ninth to put the Sox in position to win the series.
The clubs play the finale of the four-game set Sunday at 5:05 P.M. Zeke Spruill (4-4, 5.30) takes the ball for Pawtucket against Durham righty Dylan Floro (7-9, 4.85). Pregame coverage will begin on WHJJ and online at 4:50.
