Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The RailRiders rode dominant performances from their two youngest stars for an 8-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) on Sunday afternoon. The win allowed the RailRiders to avoid a sweep defeat at the hands of the Bisons (45-46).
SEVERINO TIME: Starter Luis Severino (5-0) retired 15 of the 17 batters he faced over five scoreless innings. The 21-year-old allowed one hit, walked one and struck out four in efficient fashion on 64 pitches (41 strikes). All of his wins with SWB have come on the road. He has received 60 runs of support in his nine starts for a team-best 6.7/game. The RailRiders are 7-2 when he gets the nod.
BIRD IS THE WORD: SWB's first runs came in the third inning when 22-year-old Greg Bird smashed his second home run in as many days, a three-run shot to right-center off starter Daniel Norris (2-9). Bird would collect another RBI with a single in the fifth as part of a 2-for-3 day with four RBIs, two walks and two runs scored. Bird has hit safely in eight straight games and has reached base safely in all of his nine Triple-A games.
DOWNARD SPIRAL: The RailRiders have dropped 13 of 18. The slide began with a 15-2 loss to Louisville on June 25 that saw a number of franchise records tied. SWB has outscored its foes 70-69 since the lopsided loss to Louisville.
GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: After going 2-5 last homestand, the RailRiders stand eight games below .500 at PNC Field (21-29) and 12 games over on the road (27-15). The team has hit .282 on the road compared to a .262 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 223 runs in 42 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 182 runs in 50 games (3.6/game). The pitching has performed worse on the road (3.62 ERA) than at home (3.44 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.643), who had won 17 of 20 away from Moosic before dropping five of their last eight.
UP, UP & AWAY: Rob Refsnyder followed up his MLB debut on Saturday with a special game two on Sunday. He went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer over the Green Monster that proved the difference in the 8-6 win. He left SWB as one of its hottest hitters, going 20-for-49 (.408) over his last 15 games including an active seven-game hitting streak. His 16 walks in that time tied for tops in the IL while his season-long .387 OBP ranked third. He had homered twice in his last four games played, both pull jobs hit with authority. His error total had also dropped dramatically month by month: April (7E in 20GP), May (4E in 24GP), June (2E in 27GP), July (0E in 10GP). He left with a .290 average, his best contact clip since he was at the same mark after play on May 30.
ALL-STAR UPDATE: Kyle Roller and Austin Romine each made an impact in the IL's 4-3 defeat of the PCL in last night's Triple-A All-Star Game. Roller took "Top Star" honors for the IL thanks chiefly to his two-run hit in the ninth that tied the game at 3-all. He came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a walk. Romine also came off the bench worked a walk while going 0-for-1. He caught the game's final three innings. The PCL's "Top Star" was former Yankees farmhand Peter O'Brien who blasted a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth. He went 1-for-3 with a walk.
FUTURES PAST: Meanwhile, on Sunday in the prestigious Futures Game, SWB outfielder Aaron Judge posted an infield single in the 10-1 blowout win for the United States team over the World team. He went 1-for-4 as the starting DH with a run scored and a pair of strikeouts. Double-A Trenton catcher Gary Sanchez started as the World backstop. He doubled on a 1-for-2 day.
