July 16, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Durham, NC) The Pawtucket Red Sox took a 7-5 lead on a Daniel Nava three-run homer in the eighth inning, but Durham scored four in the bottom of the frame and grabbed the series opener from the PawSox, 9-7 on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
C.J. Riefenhauser (3-2) allowed the homer to Nava but earned the win for the Bulls. Kirby Yates fanned the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Heath Hembree, in Pawtucket on a Major League Rehab Assignment, yielded four runs on two hits and did not retire a batter in the eighth. Luke Maile, who tied the game in sixth, cleared the bases with an eighth-inning double for the game-winning hit. The fourth and final run of the inning scored on a catcher's interference on the back end of a double steal.
The PawSox (39-53) grabbed a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning against starter Robert Zarate. Nava singled home Jemile Weeks for the first run of the series. Jackie Bradley Jr. followed with a run-scoring single, but an error on the CF Corey Brown, allowed a second run to score. The fourth run came on a wild pitch.
Durham (48-43) put up a four-spot in the sixth inning, collecting six hits and a walk. J.P. Arenciba, Corey Brown and Richie Shaffer had consecutive run-scoring hits off Keith Couch (ND, 5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 SO). Jonathan Aro relieved Couch later in the frame and allowed a two-out infield to Malie.
The Bulls grabbed their first lead of the game in the seventh off Aro. Ryan Brett smoked his first triple of the year and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mikie Mahtook.
Durham received a hit from all nine starters and the PawSox had all nine reach base.
The clubs play game two of the series Friday night in Durham at 7:05. Righthander Joe Kelly (0-1, 2.57) will be opposed Durham righty Bradin Hagens (1-0, 1.29). Pregame coverage begins on WHJJ and online at 6:50.
The PawSox return home to McCoy Stadium on Friday, July 24th at 7:05 P.M. to host the Buffalo Bisons. Tickets are available now at www.pawsox.com and by calling 401-724-7300.
