Red Wings right-hander Duffey and IronPigs righty Aaron Nola met Thursday, in a rematch from the July 4 game here. That game saw Duffey leave with a 3-2 lead, in a game Lehigh Valley came back to win 4-3.
Oswaldo Arcia staked Duffey and the Wings to an early lead. Chris Herrmann drew a one-out walk from Nola, and Arcia hit a long home run on a 3-2 pitch to make it 2-0 Rochester. The homer cleared the four-deck sign wall in right field, and was Arcia's eighth homer in his last 15 games (19 RBI). Reynaldo Rodriguez reached on an error, and Danny Ortiz followed with an RBI double which increased the lead 3-0.
After a base hit by Chase d'Arnaud and a walk by Duffey, the Wings found themselves in a tough situation in the top of the third as the tying run, Aaron Altherr, came up to the plate. Duffey struck him out and got out of the jam. Nola came out to the mound in the bottom of the inning and sat the Wings in order, leaving the game 3-0.
Russ Canzler led off the top of the fourth inning and drew a walk from Duffey. The first out of the top of the fourth inning was acquired by the glove of Wilkin Ramirez, robbing Cord Phelps of a base hit with a diving, sliding, backhand catch in right field. Duffey struck out Jordan Danks on a called-third strike and forced a ground ball to Doug Bernier at second base to end the top of the fourth. The IronPigs remained scoreless through four.
Ortiz led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run into the home bullpen over the right field fence. This was Ortiz's ninth home run of the season and his third at Frontier Field. Jose Martinez followed up with a base hit to left field. Next up for the Wings was Wilkin Ramirez who fouled a ball off of his left ankle and left the game.Argenis Diaz came into the game for Ramirez with one strike on him and drew a walk from Nola. Doug Bernier then loaded the bases with a base hit to left field. Eric Farris contributed to the Wings' lead after knocking a base hit between the IronPigs' shortstop and third baseman, scoring Martinez and Diaz. After tonight's base hit, Farris is 4-for-5 and seven RBI with the bases loaded this season. Cesar Jimenez relieved Nola after the Wings extended their lead. Nola had not given up more than four runs in the 2015 season in both Double-A and Triple-A, forcing his shortest outing this season. Jimenez got the next three outs to leave the score 6-0 heading to the fifth.
Nola (3-1) pitched three innings, including five batters in the fourth, giving up seven hits, six runs, five earned, and two home runs. He threw 78 pitches, 46 for strikes, including two walks and three strikeouts.
Duffey took the mound again for the sixth inning. He struck out two and forced a ground ball to end the top of the sixth inning. Pitching in the sixth for the IronPigs was Dustin McGowan, relieving Jimenez. McGowan struck out the first two batters he faced, Martinez and Diaz, and forced a pop fly off the bat of Farris to end the sixth inning.
Alex Meyer relieved Duffey of his shutout performance in the seventh inning, as he neared 100 pitches. Meyer pitched a one-two-three inning with two strikeouts and a ground out.
Duffey (4-4) pitched six innings, giving up two hits. He threw 97 pitches, 55 for strikes, including five walks and six strikeouts.
After a quick inning for the Wings offense, Michael Tonkin gave up the IronPigs' third hit of the game on a one-out base hit to left field. Tonkin struck out the next two batters to retire the side and keep the score 6-0 going into the bottom of the eighth.
Ortiz led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit to right field off of Tyler Knigge, his third hit of the game.
Aaron Thompson worked the ninth inning for the Red Wings, The three Wings relievers racked up six strikeouts in their three innings pitched, and helped the pitching staff record its league-leading 11th shutout of the season.
The Red Wings out-hit the IronPigs 8-5.
NOTES: Oswaldo Arcia became the first Red Wings player to hit eight homers in a month since Chris Colabello did it in August 2013 during his MVP season.
