Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rochester Red Wings stymied the RailRiders' hitters on Tuesday night and flew away with a 3-1 victory at PNC Field.
LET'S GET SERIESOUS: The RailRiders are guaranteed of a series setback but have a chance to avoid sweep defeat. The Red Wings swept the RailRiders in their first series of 2014, also a three-game set.
SILVER LININGS: Starter Bryan Mitchell (0-1) battled through 3.2 innings. The hard-thrower only allowed one run while scattering five hits and two walks. He struck out a Triple-A career-high seven men, but was forced to throw 87 pitches (52 strikes).
QUIRKY MOMENTS: The game sported some odd scenes. The lone run to score against Mitchell came in the third inning when catcher Josmil Pinto scored from second base on a two-out wild pitch. In the fifth, Cole Figueroa grounded out to first base on a ball he thought was foul off his foot. In the sixth, Eric Farris appeared to strike out swinging, but a dispute arose over how many strikes had been logged by reliever Jacob Lindgren. After a delay of more than five minutes, a call to the official scorer in the press box rectified the confusion and confirmed Farris had whiffed for strike three. Argenis Diaz then singled in a run to give Rochester a multi-run advantage.
TYLER TIME: Austin leads the team with seven RBIs. Only Toledo's Jefry Marte (11), who won the IL's first Batter of the Week honors on Monday, entered today with more RBIs in the IL.
BULLISH 'PEN: In relief, Lindgren, Jose Ramirez and Nick Rumbelow combined to strike out seven men in 5.1 innings. Through six games, SWB starters have gone 1-3 with a 4.03 ERA. The men given the nod have struck out 20 while walking 13 in 22.1 innings. The bullpen has gone 1-1 with a save and a 1.71 ERA. In 31.2 combined innings, RailRiders relievers have struck out 42 against just 11 walks. Rumbelow was played a role in each of the team's two wins with a win and a save. In four innings he has allowed one hit (.077 BAA) and issued one walk (0.50 WHIP) while striking out seven.
BACK ON TRACK: Through the team's first four games, four different men served as the RailRiders' DH: Austin, Jonathan Galvez, Ben Gamel and Kyle Roller. They went a collective 1-for-15 (.067) in that role. Galvez and Roller each delivered singles over the last two games to buck the trend.
OUT OF BALANCE: For the first time in the RailRiders era, SWB plays an unbalanced schedule. The International League docket had seen the club face its divisional brothers 16 times (eight home/eight road) and its non-divisional foes eight times (four home/four road). This year proves uneven in an effort to aid travel. The RailRiders and Red Wings will collide 20 times in 2015 with the meetings split evenly by location. That makes Rochester SWB's most frequent 2015 foe. Here is the breakdown for the RailRiders' schedule this season against their divisional opponents: Rochester (20); Pawtucket (19); Lehigh Valley (18); Buffalo (17); Syracuse (16).
RED WINGING IT: The RailRiders have lost 10 of their last 11 games at Rochester's home, Frontier Field. That hurt the team en route to a 5-11 performance against the Red Wings last season. The SWB franchise had not logged a losing season against Rochester since the 2007 unit also went 5-11. The RailRiders have lost 16 of their last 21 against the Red Wings going back to 2013.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders' lineup totaled five hits while the pitching staff amassed a season-best 14 strikeouts Tuesday...SWB pitching has struck out 62 men in 54 innings, good for the second-most strikeouts in the league....Since hitting for the cycle on Opening, Night, Ramon Flores finds himself in a 1-for-16 funk.
