Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA (April 15, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 8-5, Wednesday afternoon. Kila Ka'aihue hit a three-run homer, his first as a Chief, in the loss.
Lehigh Valley (3-4) took an early lead in the first. Chiefs spot starter Richard Bleier surrendered three consecutive singles to Tyler Henson, Maikel Franco and Russ Canzler, with Canzler driving in Henson to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (3-4) finally scratched across its first run in the seventh. With one out, Jason Berken hit Cutter Dykstra. Steve Lerud then knocked a key single off the wall in right, moving up Dykstra to third. Dykstra scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Derrick Robinson to tie the game at one.
But the tie was short-lived as the IronPigs immediately answered in the bottom of the frame and blew the game open. Manny Delcarmen came out of the Chiefs bullpen and walked Chris Nelson to start the inning. Chris McGuiness then doubled off the right field wall to put runners on second and third. Rene Garcia and Edgar Duran put together back-to-back singles to bring in two runs. Lehigh Valley left Berken in to lay down a sacrifice bunt and move the runners to second and third. Darin Mastroianni hit a sacrifice fly to score Garcia and give the IronPigs a 4-1 lead. From there, Henson singled in a fourth run in the inning, and Franco tripled to plate two more. After a walk to Canzler, Delcarmen surrendered a single to Nelson, who led off the inning, and drove in a sixth run. Matt Grace came out of the bullpen and allowed one more hit, a single by McGuiness, which scored Canzler and gave Lehigh Valley the seven-run seventh and an 8-1 lead.
Ka'aihue's home run brought the Chiefs within four in the eighth. In the ninth, Josh Johnson hit a pinch-hit single off Seth Rosin, and scored on a Matt den Dekker single to cut the lead to 8-5. Rosin would retire Burriss to seal the win.
Berken got the win for the IronPigs in relief. Chad Billingsley picked up a no-decision after five scoreless innings in his second rehab outing. Bleier allowed just one run in four innings in his spot start.
The Chiefs come back to Syracuse for the 2015 home opener Thursday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for Syracuse with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter still to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
