Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) jumped out to an early lead, but the Rochester Red Wings scored nine of the final 10 runs to pull out an 11-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon at PNC Field. The Red Wings (5-1) swept the three-game set. The RailRiders fell to 2-5 with the loss.
A.J. Achter (2-0) took home his second win in the series after dealing 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Tyler Webb (0-1) surrendered five runs, all unearned, on three hits in defeat.
Jaron Long looked strong in his second start for SWB before things unraveled in the sixth. The right-hander allowed just two runs in the first five frames and, at one point, retired seven straight batters.
With Long holding Rochester at bay, the RailRiders built a three-run advantage. Slade Heathcott opened the first inning with a single on the first pitch off of Red Wings starter Alex Meyer and stole second with one out. Tyler Austin drew a walk and Kyle Roller lashed a single to left-center that scored Heathcott for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Wings briefly tasted the lead in the third. Argenis Diaz and Eric Fryer began the inning with consecutive doubles. Aaron Hicks scored Diaz on a groundout and a single by Josmil Pinto brought in Fryer for a 2-1 lead.
Roller sparked the RailRiders response in the last of the third by stroking a one-out double to right-center. Austin Romine worked a walk and Cole Figueroa singled to right. Rochester right fielder Eddie Rosario fumbled the ball on the play, allowing Roller across home to knot the score 2-2. With two away, Ben Gamel punched a single to right-center, scoring Romine and Figueroa for a 4-2 advantage.
Ramon Flores bashed a moon shot out to right for his first home run of the afternoon in the fifth. His second round-tripper of the year put the RailRiders up 5-2.
Rochester began their surge against Long and SWB in the sixth. Rosario and Pinto recorded back-to-back singles to set the table. The RailRiders narrowly missed on two chances at a double play to escape the inning when Long induced consecutive grounders. Rosario scored when Reynaldo Rodriguez was ruled safe on a close play at first.
James Beresford worked a walk to bring up Jose Martinez, who singled home Rodriguez. Chasen Shreve relieved Long, but could not hold the Red Wings at bay. After a walk to Diaz, Shreve surrendered a two-run single to Fryer before escaping the inning.
Trailing 6-5 in the sixth, Flores wasted no time pulling the RailRiders even as a lined his second homer of the afternoon, this one off Stephen Pryor, just over the wall in right. The run was the first allowed by Rochester's bullpen this season.
The game remained tied at six until the top of the ninth. After Webb struck out Hicks looking, Rosario reached on a fielding error by Figueroa. Three straight singles followed to score Rosario for a 7-6 Rochester edge. Martinez and Diaz worked a pair of bases-loaded walks to force home two more runs.
Danny Burawa replaced Webb on the mound, trailing 9-6 with the bases loaded. Fryer provided the final tallies with a two-run single up the middle.
The RailRiders head out on the road for the first time in 2015 Thursday, opening a four-game series at Syracuse. The team returns home on Monday, April 20, to host the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs. For more information please call (570) 969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
