Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Brody Sutter and Zach Boychuk's two-point nights helped the Charlotte Checkers top the Norfolk Admirals by a 3-2 decision at Scope Arena on Wednesday night.

Just over halfway through the first period, Sutter and Chad LaRose rushed into the Norfolk zone on a quick two-on-one. LaRose took the puck up the left side before bumping a pass to Sutter. The pass fooled Admirals' netminder Jason LaBarbera who stretch to the far post, and Sutter took advantage of the open right side to flip in the first goal of the night at 10:39. Boychuk got his first of two assists on the night, and the Checkers went into the first intermission up, 1-0.

Norfolk found the back of the net just 1:24 into the second frame. The puck caromed from the left side around the back of Charlotte's net where a Checkers defenseman mishandled it right to Mike Sgarbossa on the right side. Sgarbossa sent a pass across the slot that found its way to Charlie Sarault in the blue paint. Sarault sank his sixth of the season to tie the contest at 1-1.

The rest of the middle frame went scoreless, but the third period was full of goals, and Charlotte converted first. The Checkers held the puck in at the blue line before throwing a shot towards LaBarbera. The goaltender made a kick save, but the rebound went straight towards Dennis Robertson at the left point. Robertson fired on LaBarbera and the rebound went to Phil Di Giuseppe, who returned the puck on net. The wrist shot glanced off defenseman Mark Fistric's skate for a 2-1 lead.

Charlotte's 27th-ranked power play capitalized with Colby Robak in the box for cross-checking. Sutter was patient at the bottom of the left circle before threading the needle across to Boychuk at the opposite ring. Boychuk tested LaBarbera and a rebound went to Brendan Woods. Woods quickly fed a wide open Sutter at the back post for the one-timer to LaBarbera's stick-side at 11:01 to extend their lead to two.

Robbie Czarnik tried to rally the Admirals with his first goal in a Norfolk uniform. Sgarbossa set up the play on the left wall by leaving the puck at the left circle to be collected Czarnik. Czarnik drove towards the slot and wristed a shot on net, which squeezed through the pads of the goaltender to cut the deficit to one at 18:09. Fistric earned the secondary assist, but the Checkers held off Norfolk for the remaining 1:51 to win, 3-2.

MacIntyre saved 34 of the 36 Norfolk shots he faced, while LaBarbera stood strong on 26 of 29 Charlotte opportunities. The Admirals went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage, and the Checkers were 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Admirals return to the ice on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. for the first of back-to-back games against the Albany Devils.

Three Stars:

1) CHA #12 Brody Sutter (2 G)

2) CHA #35 Drew MacIntyre (34 saves)

3) NOR #17 Charlie Sarault (1 G)
