Rockford scored the first three goals of the game, and despite a late charge, the Lake Erie Monsters (28-26-6-4) fell to the IceHogs 3-2 (38-19-5-2) Wednesday night at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, Illinois. Ben Youds and Bruno Gervais scored for the Monsters, while Ben Street and Andrew Agozzino notched a pair of assists each for the Monsters. Agozzino's assists extended his Monsters season-long point streak to nine games. The Monsters visit the Charlotte Checkers in their next game on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Former Monsters defenseman Kyle Cumiskey scored on a low shot from the left circle at 10:35 of the first period to give Rockford a 1-0 lead. With Rockford on a power play, they extended their lead to 2-0 when Ville Pokka scored on a slap shot from the center-point at 18:01 of the opening frame.
With a power play to start the second period, Rockford's Brandon Mashinter scored to give the IceHogs a 3-0 lead as he tapped in a centering feed from Mark McNeill. The Monsters built pressure as the second period wore along, and at the 11:16 mark of the second, Ben Street found Ben Youds on a back-door pass for a power play goal; the eighth of the season for Youds. Andrew Agozzino assisted on Youds' goal, extending his Monsters season-long point streak to nine games.
Just 1:55 later, Monsters defenseman Bruno Gervais rushed the net to follow the rebound from a Street shot, and hammered the puck home to pull the Monsters to within 3-2 with a shorthanded goal. Agozzino also assisted on the second goal of the season for Gervais at the 13:11 mark.
In the third period, the Monsters outshot Rockford 13-5, but were unable to tie the game. Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard turned away 27 of 30 shots in the game, and his individual record is now 16-14-7. Rockford's Antti Raanta is 5-0-1 after stopping 30 of 32 Monsters shots in the IceHogs win.
The Monsters visit Charlotte Friday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. Friday's game airs live on AM 1420 'The Answer'.
